One successful trick I always used was to go through the alphabet thinking of different types of a certain subject - for example, sitcom titles "a - Allo Allo, b - Brittas Empire, C - Curb your enthusiasm" etc. You can do the same with any subject - authors/movies/pop songs/countries, etc. It basically distracts your mind just enough while at the same time being boring enough not to excite your mind. I only used to ever get to about G or H before dropping off, but that says more about my lack of general knowledge than anything!
I try to think of the local topography, remove all the buildings and roads and see what's left. I sometimes add a bit of grass too. The downs aren't that far so It's reasonably lumpy here.
It's surprising how difficult it is to imagine the slopes even in a road we've lived in for over twenty years. It might be a bit samey if you live in Lincolnshire, though.

I do that too: Boy's name, girl's name, animal, plant, country, city, and a word of four or more syllables. Can't think of a country beginning with O. Alas, I often get to Z without getting to Zzzzz.......
Not sure why I’m awake ... have been gazing at the waxing gibbous moon ... the sky’s quite clear and there’s a touch of frost on the car roofs. We don’t get much traffic as we’re on a cul de sac off a cul de sac off a cul de sac if you get me, but a big white van has just driven from the end of the road and disappeared up the road opposite ... that’s a cul de sac too ... wonder what that’s about ... I shall have a warm drink ...

Don't know what's wrong with me tonight but I've been lying in bed wide awake for a couple of hours, then just as I was dropping off my oldest boy woke up crying and has only just got back to sleep.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
