@Gardengirl.. I had a look at that. Apparently, it's just vinegar and washing up liquid. You can make your own.

They do well get trapped in the bottles and you can put them anywhere as small with sticker on side may cost a bit that is why it is better to get more than less bulk buy like

I caught quite a few with fruit vinegar and  WULiquid. I'm certain that wine or fruit juice would have worked as well. The wul breaks the 'skin'  on the top of the liquid so they sink and drown but it's much more satisfying to squish them with wet kitchen roll.
But any case, they'll be gone really soon as temperatures drop.
The thing you buy is no different apart from the sticky bit and why would you need that.? Tuck your egg cup out of sight.

This is the first time I have come across fruit flies and I hope it will be the last as they are driving me mad. OH bought me a bouquet for our anniversary and when it came into the house a swarm of fruit flies came out of it. (OH did complain and got a refund).
I have a bowl of Apple Cider vinegar with aa touch of washing up liquid and heated it in the microwave to bring out the smell of fruit. Must admit it does attract them and they drown but not enough of them. We have a hand held vacuum cleaner and hoover them up but they never seem to get any less. I can open a cupboard door and out one will fly. Where do they hide? When temperatures drop where do they go to? Even the odd one has got upstairs.

Don't leave any fruit or vegetables out. Keep them in the fridge.   If you have a council food bin, don't put anything plant based in it. They can get in even if it's tightly sealed. Move your bins away from the kitchen and wait for cold weather . Don't eat bananas in your bedroom!

Apparently they breed really fast something to do with very short life span

Many thanks @B3 ! I will take your advice and hopefully they will gradually disappear.
I don't think we will be eating bananas in the bedroom!
  • It's about 4:45am, and I've been awake on and off all night. Again..
    Humph.

  • Sorry to hear that @pansyface
  • My wife had set the alarm for 6am, because she has a blood test at 7am. But she disappeared at 5am. Quietly traipsed downstairs. But I heard her, and she knows that.
