Finally! I managed an hour in the garden. I emptied one of my big containers and planted some tulip bulbs. I do not hold much hope of a spectacular display as the bulbs were not fat and juicy, I am going to lift some self sown forget me not plants to go in the top for a little bit of extra colour. Now I have two more containers to do. It was lovely to sit in the sun and get my hands into soil again.
Signed my mother and I up for an online seminar, as well - Restoration Ecology 101 given by the Native Plant Trust. This is before the gardening with native plants seminar, so it works out well. How to prepare the land for restoration, then what plants to use in restoration.
For seed sowing, I've got some allium under the lights (but not sure they'll actually germinate), and today I'll be sowing some Blue Fescue grass to use as a border around my lower gravel patio. Verbena and yarrow are coming along nicely. One of our clients from work is a full time farmer, so I picked her brain about sweet corn yesterday and am mentally preparing for spring sowing. We discussed the pros and cons of direct sowing vs starting inside, and I think I'm going to try both to see which is more successful. One more experiment!
Another 5" of snow predicted for tomorrow, so despite the late start to winter and small storms, we've still got a decent snowpack on the ground to insulate perennials, and provide groundwater for wells come spring.

Metacomet soil with hints of Woodbridge and Pillsbury
No real gardening but needed to water some out door pots that the wind had dried out Also checked the greenhouse , did a bit of watering but what surprised me , one of my agapanthus pots that I over winter in there had a flower bud ! Amazing
Weeded the very overgrown wheelbarrow and found some lovely crocus plants in flower. Carefully removed the ox eye daisy plants (they were taking over) from the narcissus bed. Moved a mulberry (not too big!) and planted out 2 more evergreen shrubs.
Swept the paving - yet again. The Council's two very large birch trees outside our boundary seem to drop loads of twigs almost every night, then the birds kick moss off the roof so it's an ongoing job, rather like housework. Found and cloched more emerging crocuses.
I’ve potted on some snapdragons seedlings today in the greenhouse and did some sorting out of other pots of plants in there. Found the Heuchera Apple Crisp has finally succumbed, the stem had rotted away. On the look out for another one, it’s gorgeous when in flower. Cut down an ornamental grass and tidied up round it afterwards…dead leaves all over the place.
Is window gardening something others do? (Looking out of the window on a day like today when no one sensible ventures out and planning what needs pruning, moving or removing!)
