We've started picking the apples, our Elstar, which are eaters. The other three apple trees didn't produce much at all and the pear's been a disaster - again. Thinking of chopping it down as it's shading the veg bed behind it.
North East Somerset - Clay soil over limestone
  • The only things I've done in the garden today, are deadhead the calendula and dahlias, and throw a ball back over the fence.
  • After neglecting the veg patch for various reasons had a go and cleared loads of weeds and found yet more beans!
The magnolias grown from seed many years ago have decided that growing up and up is the way to go. So had to be pruned a lot. Probably no flowers next year.
  • Added more info to my new garden diary. bulbs to be planted and how. All I need to decide now is where!
Accidentally bought two plants too. A scenty pelargonium from my tiny local GC and a lupin from my neighbour  o:). She's always giving me stuff but these were packed up ready for her boot sale tomorrow. We nearly came to fisticuffs over the price! Unseemly scuffles!

I've planted up a spare pot with some lovely Kind Alfred  daffodils today which we got at a garden centre this morning. I just love daffs and as the pot was going spare.....I couldn't resist getting them. 🙂 Plus, the bulbs were in great condition and big.
  • I finally planted some very shrivelled seed potatoes, some even had baby potatoes growing. internatonal Kidney. I left some in for 18 months a couple of years ago and had quite a good crop from them so these may produce a few spuds for next year. They have two choices, they will or they will not!
  • Not a hope of any gardening! Howling hooley blowing with torrential "showers".
Made a couple of pots of Sweet and Sour Tomato Chutney yesterday.
The beefsteak tomatoes have finished producing fruit, still some salad tomatoes to come. It is rather satisfying to be in the greenhouse, warm and dry, while the rain hammers on the glass.
  • I don't know about warm @Joyce Goldenlily my greenhouse says 18° I too have picked another bowl of tomatoes and a cucumber this morning,  dodging the rain as its not really stopping just slowing.
  • Yes. My shorts, lightweight trousers, vest tops, etc. are on their back in the suitcase until next year. There is a definite autumnal nip in the air first thing. Also very heavy dew. I did manage to walk the dog late lunchtime without getting drenched. It seemed everyone had the same idea, I have never seen the village green so busy at lunchtime.
  • Managed this morning to do some more clearing of the overgrown pond. Have left the plants at the side so that any wildlife can get back into the pond. Then the wind got up again and down came the rain. Filled the pond up!
