@1634 Racine It is a 3 part plan really, ridding myself of a tedious weekly round of moss & weed trimming, in addition to creating tidier raised beds and extending the driveway into the bargain
@Lizzie27 Drastic?!, I did consider digging it all out by hand, thinking "not much there" filled 2 x 8yd skips
@Amphibios I could post a separate project steps thread if you think it may be of interest?

Just another day at the plant...

@owd potter I think the forum always loves a project. Will be nice to see your progress.

@GWRS apologies were you referring to my project or owd potter?
Owd potter is freeing themselves from the tyranny of the lawn.
I just updated the thread I started  last year. I will update when there is decent progress but feeling it will be a while yet until I can get input on the fun design part 😍

Fed the roses, camelias and rhododendrons.  Watered the last of the container plants before taking them to Secondborn's tomorrow.  Every year I remove a bit more of the lawns to make room for more plants.  Have considered removing most of it, but not sure how I would redesign it.
Hi from Kingswinford in the West Midlands
  • Picked a colander full of strawberries, planted out some Rudbeckia and foxgloves and watered (first thing after checking our moth box). OH mowed paths in field and lawn.

Potted on my tomato seedlings, bit surprised they had such tiny rootballs so perhaps should have left them longer. Then I followed our resident compost makers' instructions to mow over hedge trimmings - dead easy and have layered them with shredded paper in the current compost bin. It's heating up in there by the day so I'm glad I wrapped all my surplus fleece and bubble wrap round them.

@Lizzie27 mowing hedge clippings is absolutely the right thing for composting, they'll definitely pep up a compost heap👍

That's good to know @Wilderbeast, I was a bit sceptical about the mowing but it worked like a dream!  It hit 28c here by 6pm tonight so goodness knows how hot the bin will get! One query though, I don't seem to have many of the little pink worms - would they have gone to the bottom? Our bins are sitting of necessity on tough rootproof membrane (big tree nearby) so presumably the worms can't retreat deep underground?

@Lizzie27 If the bin is hot then the worms retreat from the heat, I had to move all my composting set up last week they were all steaming with heat and the worms were in huge clumps in cool corners (my 6 year had hold of handfuls of them 🥴) I've no idea where they come from, my bins are straight on to the earth.
