It's the unregulated or fake imports that are really worrying, much more so than shortages.

Yes - anyone for more foot and mouth from unregulated meat products?

Dirty water or pesticides used on vegetables could be an issue too. It's not just meat.

It seems fine in theory Philippa but maybe not so good in practice yet - https://www.foodnavigator.com/Article/2017/03/24/France-s-food-waste-ban-One-year-on

However, it's a start and a first in the EU where food waste is widespread.

It has occurred to me that, while people over this side of the Channel will have no problems with fresh food and anything else I might just hit a shortage of Golden Syrup and Marmite.  I can probably live without Marmite but I use syrup in a lot of cake and biscuit recipes............   Maybe I need to stock up?

Plastic bottles here.  Much easier to handle than the tins but not too environmentally friendly.

Plastic bottles here too, like sauce bottles, just squeeze out what you want, no messy spoons.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • But there's something wonderful about prising off the lid and seeing your reflection in the golden, sticky goo... like a lake...  sorry......

The tin design hasn't really changed since my childhood - still green and gold printing, with the lion and "Out of the strong came forth sweetness" on the front.  Though it does now say 907g instead of 2lb...

Golden syrup is just made with sugar cane or sugar beet. British Sugar grow refine and process sugar from beet in this country. It might not be Tate & Lyle, but it will be golden syrup.

Of course the problems we think we will have here also applies to the rest of Europe as any good flowing out of the UK will have to go through customs on the French side, so all the best quality beef we send out will be delayed along with welsh lamb, rhubarb baked beans etc etc so it's not going to be just us that suffers if at all.

And just maybe we will get to buy British beef etc rather than the rubbish we import from Europe in the future.
