Beautiful flowers, everyone. Loved the almond tree, the hellebores and the turkestanika tulip. My species tulip are just starting to form buds. Beautiful daffodil, Ante30.

GD - if you take a look at Peter Nyssen's site, you'll see lots of botanical tulips there. I have quite a few types. Shorter and plenty of bright colours, and perfect for near the front of a border. They come back every year, so much better than the big, blowsy ones if you want a reliable spring display.  :)
They're just starting to appear here.
Good website, thanks @Fairygirl . Tulip turkestanica is here: https://www.peternyssen.com/tulip-turkestanica.html
  • Thank you Fairygirl and Papi Jo, I have taken note of the site, the flowering tulips do look lovely.  Most of my standard tulips are only good for the first year, by the second year they are weaker and then never re-appear.  I plant them in pots in a good peat mix, in the garden flower beds they disappear after the first year of flowering.  I don't know what I am doing wrong, although I am told in the bulb fields of Holland the bulbs are replaced every year.

    That's a shame @Guernsey donkey 2
I find that i can't grow daffs for the 2nd year, it must be your soil.

I have Turkestanica too, but not out yet here Papi Jo - you're much further ahead of us  :)
GD - the 'usual' tulips need quite specific conditions, so they don't usually last  long. They need really sharp drainage and sun. If I get a couple of years out of them that's pretty good. I don't really have them in beds, just pots. I love them, but haven't had the time to buy new ones every year and plant them. Now I have time, but can't justify the cost!
The yellow and red Apeldoorn ones come back though - they're different again.

These are both botanical tulips. I created a new bed after my extension was built, and these were put in that autumn. It's all hot, clashing colours

The orange ones are Fusilier, and the violet/cerise ones are Persian Beauty.
I'm hoping they've survived the scaffolding that was on them recently!  :s
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Lovely pictures everyone and thanks for the extra information Fairy.  Unless there is a special offer or my Dutch relatives bring me the bulbs I have all but given up on tulips which is a pity as there is such a wealth of colour in the varieties.  I like the idea of a hot bed Fairy!

They are beautiful little tulips @Fairygirl. Do they need the same cold weather to plant as the normal ones? Its too mild here to plant those without them getting blight.

Hi Nollie - I planted mine soon after getting them, but we don't really have to wait to plant the usual tulips, as it's plenty cold enough here to plant in October, and even September, so I'm not totally sure with the botanical ones.
If you email Peter Nyssen's site, I'm sure they'd help you though. They're very good  :)

Our climate/ground here isn't great for the usual kinds, GD, but it's so easy to be seduced by them! The little ones are a real treat though, and the bright colours are very welcome after a long winter.  :)
