Thankyou @owd potter It is a Brachyglottis (l think they used to be called Senecio). It came from a cutting from a neighbour's garden. She referred to it as "a petrol station plant", as it's the sort of thing you find in shopping centre car parks and they use it in a petrol station nearby!

What is the grey foliage plant behind the Helenium in pic 1?
