@Fairygirl, it's due to her SLE health issues that daughter wants to take early retirement and to have some quality of life when she can.
She's quite right, Joyce. I know many people here have either had scares themselves, or those dear to them have, often at a very young age, and at some point you just have to re evaluate. I'm good at coping with very little, so I'm sure it'll be fine. I expect it'll cause a few raised eyebrows on Monday Thanks to all of you for your support. It means a lot

@Fairygirl I haven't retired but I have stopped working for other people. I worked 90 hour weeks for 5 years. It was a big step to stop, and we don't have much money most of the time. I do work, I do still go to London for meetings, but I work 2 or 3 days a week and get on a train once every 3 or 4 weeks instead of working 6 days a week and travelling 9 days out of 10. The lack of regular income brings its own stresses, but I've never regretted the decision to get off the treadmill. Enjoy that moment when you tell 'them'. I know I did.

I've worked long hours in the past too, with few holidays, and I reckon I've done more hours than many people would in their lifetime, so I'm not going to be made to feel guilty, although I know that will happen. Your long hours spent travelling is a real killer too. I'm glad you don't regret the decision you took

Go for it Fairygirl, I got out at 56 and was happy to do so having seen plenty of good people who never made it. The job had been mostly varied and interesting but the glory days came to an end with the dawn of austerity and "doing more with less". Yeah right, not in my world.
My daily commute to London took 2 hours each way on a good day so it was a great relief to give that up. Once the mortgage was gone the financial pressure dropped so despite having a bit less money it really didn't matter. Time matters more than money.
Some said I got lucky but I put in the decades and held up my end of the deal right up until they wanted to get rid of us so was able to leave with a clear conscience.
I’m off to town. I’ve decided to go to Aldi, Coles and Woolworths and walk around all their air conditioned aisles, for exercise. I don’t really having anything on my shopping list, but I might just pick up one or two things to justify being there😃
It’s stinking hot here again, or should I say, still.
