Woolworths in Australia is very different from the Woolworths we used to have here. Woolworths is like Asda, Coles is more like Tesco.(Ever so slightly more upmarket) They have IGA which is like a local franchise Spar store. That used to be it for general food shopping, but now they are getting Lidl and Aldi to shake the market up a bit.
My Husband has got up early to go have a word with the GP practice Pharmacist. (their request). They want him to try a (outrageously expensive) monthly injection for his cholesterol levels as he doesn't tolerate statins. That is going to be a non starter. Apart from he hates injections, it might take his cholesterol lower, but any side effects are going to last at least a month, he can't just stop taking the tablets like with statins. Looking up the clinical trials, it also knackers the immune system. The cholesterol might not get him, but the pneumonia or sepsis will. If his cholesterol levels were off the scale I could understand it, but the are only just above normal.
Now if they were giving out free passes for the swimming pool or gym, we might get somewhere. It would actually be less expensive to join the most expensive health club in town, than have the injections. (£168 per monthly injection)
Pat E, Those watch counters are a bigger con than Sat Nav, my Daughter gets in a state because she has not completed her number of steps, I looked them up and they are so inaccurate it is a wonder they are not taken to court for lying, "err" but then we have the President of the US, ok I give in.
Retirement is a state of mind, firstly you are not at the end of your life, you are beginning new adventures, a change of direction that could lead to places you have never been and I do not mean the Costa Del Sol. When ICI put me in charge of the Heavy Fabrication and Shut Down Unit they gave me a secret mission at the same time and three years to complete it plus as much money to spend as I wanted, they wanted a massive change I had to bring it about. We give you three years and if you bring in half of what we want we will be grateful. Eighteen Months later they were congratulating me for fully completing the task and also not using most of the money on the table. My Salary and Pension pot went through the roof which set me thinking. Talking it over with Joan we decided to give it two more years then take early retirement. They tried talking me out of it but we had worked everything out and knew it was what we wanted, I never looked back. I would never advise people to do it off the cuff, work it all out first make your calculations, once sure walk away and never look back. No more six o clock out of bed and into the office, no more being on the end of a phone 24/7 and no more "if this shut down over runs you will be costing us £1,000,000 a day". (We never did over run but I did lose sleep at times). My Men and Women gave me a leaving party, never known to happen before, were they glad or sad to see me go? the Silver Tankard was inscribed, "Frank had no parents but he was fair" I am still working that out. The saying is "Life begins at forty" no life begins when you retire, the earlier the better. Fairygirl, you should never be made to feel unworthy, we all do the jobs that need to be done that makes each and every person worthy. You have obviously thought about it well sort everything out then wind it up and start your new life, who knows where it will lead. Frank.
All this talk of retiring......and today I have been reminded that I have spent 30 years working for the same company. Yes....three decades 😱. A friend from those days has just pointed out that when I started Jason and Kylie were No 1 with Especially for You ....and no, I didn’t buy it 😳
Pat Glad your hubby is safe. As regards the step counters yes it is true that some are not that accurate but the point is it's all relative. The idea is just to encourage you to move a bit more. As I said yesterday, they are realising that sitting down is the new smoking in terms of health risk. The recommendation of 10,000 steps a day is an arbitrary figure with no hard science behind it but it equates to roughly 5 miles a day depending on your stride length. So if you start at 5000 a day and the same device encourages you to increase it then it is all to the good. The best bet is not to get too hung up on the absolute figure. Yes I have one I do wear it most of the time including at night as mine tracks sleep as well, but I try not to obsess about it. My OH has one as well & we have proved a long held idea, she is much shorter than me, we always joked that if we went on the same walk she did half as many steps again as me i.e. she takes 3 steps to my 2. The trackers bear this out almost exactly Fidget, your OH has my sympathy, everyone is different but he sounds similar to me, I was forced on to statins by the medics because of family history rather than my absolute levels (never more than total of 6). I resisted for as long as I could, but even the consultant described my diet as exemplary, so diet and these plant sterol foods had no effect on me. I could have refused them but you get the blackmail of "we cant take responsibility for you if you don't take them".
Morning all. Day off today so Christmas tree is coming down today followed by a big vacuum and tidy. I am planning on retiring as early as feasible. I have already reduced my hours to help the work:life balance (something I did after my Mum died so I could spend more time with my family and the little nieces). I love most of my job, most of the time but I certainly don’t want it to dominate my life. If aliens analysed our lives, they may find it bizarre that we conform to work so much and ‘hold out’ for a pension we may never really enjoy. AB - “we can’t take responsibility for you” - I wonder if ‘they’ say that to the obese, the smokers and the heavy drinkers ..? In my experience - no. Have a fab day everyone - I’m off to de-Christmas the house...

Frank, I agree about the watch. That’s why I hardly ever put it on.😂
Im in bed early. Hubby can barely keep his eyes open, so I’m keeping him company. Luckily I got a good book.
