It reminds me of directions I was given to find an office building in Birmingham - 'it's the one that looks like someone's been sick on it'. By which direction I found it easily

Not seen the pic, but it reminds me of the Dave Allen joke about the woman asking the Father about the colour choice of her wedding dress - white or blue? He assured her white was the only option for a pure young woman - only an unsavoury type of woman would choose blue. She replied, pointing with a finger - 'ah that's grand then, Father. I'll have a white one ....with the little blue dots here, and here, and here......'

I used to love Dave Allen ! Getting back on to the curmudgeonly theme, l see there is an interview with Simon Mayo in the DM online, where he talks about the way the Radio 2 powers that be treated him over the changes to Drivetime. The guy in charge didn't even have the guts to tell him about the changes over the phone, let alone face to face, instead he rang his agent.
Sounds about right Anni. The whole thing was a shambles and they can dress it up all they like - they ruined the best show on the radio. What's interesting is that Simon is now presenting a modern, classical music show which will have a version of the 'confessions'.
Dave Allen was the greatest.

I was lucky enough to see him. Never laughed so much in my life My gripe today is modern varnish. I've already mentioned it on another thread. It's hopeless. Three coats with a day in between to 'cure' and it still doesn't look like it's substantial enough to withstand anything. I liked the old, bombproof, breathing in the fumes, turps washing, stuff we used to get. Paint's the same. Some of it's dreadful. Just because I now have the time to give woodwork three coats, it doesn't mean I want to....

FG - some of it is good. In Belgium we had chestnut floorboards laid upstairs and I oiled them to feed them then left them to cure a week and finally applied 3 coats of something they called "vitrificateur" for floors which was an acrylic/water based varnish you had to mix by adding a small can of activator to a large can and then paint on in 3 coats. It's as hard as glass, hence the name, and doesn't scratch or fade. I used the same stuff on some solid pine chests of drawers and a bed frame for Possum after I'd stripped and colour washed it to keep it pale. 18 years later it has survived childhood, teen years and moving from house to apartment to another apartment. These days they sell it ready mixed so just look for hard wearing floor varnish. It doesn't go yellow like the old oil based varnishes either.
