Trouble is that on average a smart meter saves £11 a year,
How do they calculate that figure? A meter is just a meter - it is not an energy SAVING device, it's an energy measuring device. You only save money if you use the information it provides to change the way you behave in order to then reduce your energy demand. It would be impossible to calculate how much you might adapt, surely? A bit like the 'payback' calculated for solar PV - if you only use the amount of money you get paid for what you generate, it'll take decades to pay back the cost of the panels. The bit they can't predict is how much you change your energy consumption habits in order to use energy that's free to you, while the sun is out. That's the bit that makes all the difference, in cost terms.

My guess is the £11 figure is just an average that the smart network might save by switching off your stuff at peak times - I'm not sure how far they go with that yet.

No mobile signal at my house. I'd have a smart meter if I could.

It is interesting, that there seem to be quite a few of us who have no mobile signals at home.
In my ideal world, there would be no mobile signals anywhere.
How can you lie there and think of England

    True.
I suppose I do carry one, just never turn it on, much to OH's occasional annoyance.

  • I was so pleased I had a smartphone yesterday evening ... I was able to track down a locksmith in this area who turned out and let me into my home and fitted a new lock. Love it  B) ... it will only take over your life if you’re daft enough to let it   ;)

You don’t need mobiles or internet to have a smart meter, just a phone line. (So I have been led to believe, could be wrong).

We’ve got a phone line Lyn, it is the lack of mobile signal that is the problem here - that’s what the smart meters use to transmit the usage data.  If we were prepared to pay ‘000’s to have our meter relocated from the understairs cupboard we would be ok.......instead I am waiting for the technology to catch up

Our cottage in Norfolk doesn't have a mobile phone signal but it does have a smart metre. OH thinks the smart metre is a good thing.

I haven't posted for a couple of days, my cold got worse and feverish and my voice disappeared then went croaky. I couldn't go to the Carol Service today, I went to bed. A friend read my reading and OH took in my mince pies and decorations. I was looking forward to it and my son, daughter and 5 grandchildren were there so I missed them.

  • That's a shame, BL.  Hope you feel better soon.
