  • We used to have 'strong wind and gales' .... now it seems the only gales ever mentioned are in the Shipping Forecast... everything else is 'Storm Samantha' or who/whatever.

You rarely hear of anyone famous called Gale nowadays, Storm on the other hand - two a penny! It will be sad if the weather is forced to succumb to fashion, although it is not such a superficial commodity, reckon it is biting back! Bring back Gale! ( don't you just love the shipping forecast, a twice daily trip round the coast  :) )

As a girl's name, isn't it usually spelt Gail?  I've always assumed it started as a shortening of the Old Testament name Abigail.  Is Storm a person's name now?  The only person I know called Storm is a Dartmoor pony.  In Welsh, "weather" names are quite traditional, such as Eira (snow), Enfys (rainbow) and Seren (star).

Ah josusa47, if only life were that simple  :)  there have been outbreaks of odd spelled names for as long as I can remember, occasionally due I am sure to the poor adult literacy of some parents.

I was attempting to be punny but was provoked by memories of Rusty Nail and the American tradition of using last names as first names  :s

  • I was at school with a girl named Gayle ... apparently it's one of those rarities amongst names, a name used by any gender without a change in spelling.   Alison is another.

I had some grief from my daughter as we named her Elisabeth, apparently everyone made an assumption about her spelling! I pointed out it was the European spelling but that fell on a deaf teenagers ears. Now she is happy as Larry, she designs and makes bespoke garments and likes to be 'different' so, all's well  :)

Just a small moan about the shipping forecast - I used to look forward to Scilly Isles light automatic and now it's gone! Just left with Sandettie light automatic which has never quite fitted with the weather vessels either side of it

In these modern times I'm not entirely sure whether she's happy as Larry or happy as Larry. One of my wife's distant relatives has a daughter who has just decided she'd be happier as a boy.

In other news Nigels have recovered from threat of extinction with 11 Nigels born in the last year. In typical news style it was reported that 'less than 3' Nigels were born in 2016. Apparently no one can work out if it was 1 or 2 Nigels. I wonder if Monty is to thank for any of those?
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • Apparently wherever you read it can't work out that it should be 'fewer than three'. Garry's are disappearing too.
