nanny beach , I feel for you. Since giving up booze 2 1/2 years ago my sleep has been terrible. Similar patter to you: sleep for an hour then wide awake. I think I averaged about 4 or 5 but felt terrible , all the time. What seems to have worked/ helped me in the last few weeks is (almost ) giving up caffeine . I don't have any after 11am and my sleep has settled down . Last night was an exception . I went to bed, tired, at 10 was still awake at 12 so got up and pottered about for half an hour then went back to bed. Awake again at 5, got up and had a cup of decaf tea then back to bed. Even though Hubby phoned at 8.30, I got back to sleep until Posty woke me at 9.45 when he rung the doorbell. Don't get fixated on the "if you dont get 8 hours, you will get dementia, cacner, heart attack, stroke, " I think, if you read the small print , it says your chance increases, it doesn't say you WILL get. Don't give up , and good luck.
I've just had my pack from the hospital. EEK! What the nurse on the phone politely referred to as "bowel prep" has to be done "2 hours prior to appointment" As it's going to take us over an hour to get there, I think I might have to give them a wee ring.
Who forgot it's Assumption today?? SM closed!! However we had a good gander round the street market and fair and found a pair of leather flip flop type sandals for me and, after 2 years o searching, a square frying pan for Possum with a fat rather than ridged base. Japanese omelettes or something. Sat in the sun for a beer, fizzy water and coffee respectively.
I'm going to spend half an hour trying to get my legs brown in the sun now and then sew possum's new frock. I want it done for this weekend and now need to head off to the SM again tomorrow morning.
Nanny B - if you're not tired you're probably OK and, tho it may take a while, your body and brain will eventually cotton on to being able and allowed to sleep at night.
Hosta - go early? Take a good book?

I'm so glad the caffeine reduction seems to be doing the trick, Hosta. After all the things you've tried and all the terrible nights you've had, it must be a relief. I think when you're prone to sleep problems there's always going to be the odd night when you fall prey to them again, even when something is generally working.

Hi chicky, you snuck in there! Yes, that venue is amazing isn't it? I looked at photos online and the foyer is even more extraordinary. Lovely music too - George Enescu. The Athenaeum is the home of the Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra so very appropriate - if somewhat daunting - to play his work there.
That's a relief re: the cricket! Have a good time - and just cheer both teams on, why not? (Does one cheer at cricket or is it more a matter of polite applause? ).
This entertained me this morning. Love Susie Dent. Interesting about Jerusalem artichokes!

OH went to watch La Rochelle rugby play Wasps last spring. He had no attachment to either team but likes good rugby so applauded both teams when they made a good play. The people next to him turned and said "You must be English." Try it Chicky.
Glad the orchestra stuff is going so well LG. Sounds like she's found a good place to be.
Assumption is a national holiday here and in Belgium and, no doubt, other Catholic countries too so you'd think I'd be used to it but it clean passed me by this year.

Thanks LG . I missed your post this morning as I was typing mine at the same time. Lovely music and beautifully played. Was it you who said Shirley Balllas's WDYTYA was a good one? Sorry if I've got it wrong, but I watched it last night and really enjoyed the story. I have to say, I didn't warm to her though. Hey ho. A good watch nonetheless.
@Obelixx I have to be at the hospital at 9am, but to factor in traffic we really need to allow an hour and a half to get through Bideford and Barnstaple and get parked at the hospital. The instructions say take it 2 hours before the appointment, but I'm not sure it'll have , erm, " worked " by the time I need to leave.

Funnily enough, Assumption Day didn't really register here...
Congratulations on the frying pan!
