Liriodendron, I hope you complained to the school, and not curmudgeonly but with rightful indignation. The head of music should certainly have been given a flea in his ear for not promoting his charges.

"In my primary school, we had a much broader curriculum than they have now. We had music, singing, French, science, dancing in addition to the usual suspects."

Me too. In the 70s. Nature trips, lots of art, loads of swimming. And a commitment to civics - raising money for overseas charities, volunteering, env awareness. I hope that charity work is still part of the picture, working to undo some of the self obsession of the age. Most of the teens I know have never volunteered a day in their lives and wouldn't dream of it.

I'm going to have a right moan here then. When I was a child - schooling in Scotland in the 50s - at primary we spent the majority of our time on sums, writing skills, reading, spelling. We had gym and sewing once a week, singing once a week, nature study once a week. Can't remember ever having art, def no trips, def no swimming as the nearest pool was 12 miles away. Science - what on earth was that?? in primary?
In my view there is plenty of time to learn the 'niceties' of life like art and music later in life and in your own time - school should be used for giving children the means, not only to earn a decent wage, but to do so at a job they will enjoy.
AND not only but also - the reason we appeared to do so much more at primary school then as opposed to now - back then, the teachers did not spend half their time trying to keep order in the classroom as they do now.............

Problem is hogweed, what if the job they would really enjoy, be really good at, and maybe even earn a lot of money at, was in art or music.

I am really angry, not sure if this should be on this thread, but I am putting it here, so tough.
A few days ago I stayed in a nice little hotel, it had 5 staff on duty, and all were from the EU.
What the #### are we going to do when we leave the EU?
There won't be anyone to do these jobs.

Don't think who is going to run our hotels or pick fruit is the biggest problem we will have, punkdoc.

Who will keep our hospital wards going is rather more pressing?

It's already happening, doctors, nurses, teachers, research scientists.

Is anyone pleased with our PM's handling of Brexit?
She seems to have united the country , leavers and remainers in thinking it's a total mess. Neither are happy so well done Theresa Mayhem for bringing us all together.

That's the point for me too.

Every sphere of music and art should be championed, Glastonbury, The Proms, Opera, Grime, the lot.
We produce some of the biggest selling "pop" artists in the world here (I think of Adele and One Directions to name but two )
We don't all have to love, or even understand it all, but even in pure monetary terms it's hugely beneficial to our economy. The pleasure art gives to us all is immeasurable.
