I prefer it written in capitals. ID, CD etc. Plant id sounds a bit psychological to me. I do hate free-range apostrophes though.

    Ah.... the bless'ed Grocer's Apostrophe.

What's it called when initial letters of something make a word?  Acronym?

    As in PITA
We are sensitive souls, more susceptible to life's aggravations than is the common prejudice.
    PITA affect us deeply.

Laura, you've just inspired me to invent a new game : compose a phrase for which "acronym" is an acronym.  Such as:

Association for the Corruption of Ravishing, 'ot, Nubile Young Men.  I'm definitely blaming that on the heat.

I had to look it up as I couldn't remember. Initialism. To be an acronym you have to be able to say the letters as a word like NASA.  ID is technically an abbreviation of identification but is interchangeable with the initialism of Identification Document.

I don’t mind which way it’s written, my English is hopeless, but I wish they would add ‘please’  instead of a demand.
