I'd like to try Mahonia 'Soft Caress', if I can get hold of one. It grows to 4ft high and wide, with soft divided leaves and yellow flowers from August to November. I too had a Mahonia japonica which got huge, gaunt and leggy and had to go. Pity, because the flowers were lovely.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

@Liriodendron,..thank you,..Mahonia 'Soft Caress',..describes it very well as compared to Mahonia japonica which i have,..there is a more detailed name for the latter but i forget what it is,..yes the blooms are yellow and pretty much the same but its the leaves where the difference is,..you can caress them and not at all prickly like the other one,..which yours as with mine become very leggy,..i will keep my fingers crossed for you hoping you find Mahonia 'Soft Caress'.
Lovely photos Philip especially the first one, so tranquil.
@Joyce21,..thanks Joyce,..with the river rising it of course changes the landscape and despite the restriction to meadows where i walk i can still enjoy the beauty of the water and reflections,..which makes up for the flooding.
I have a Hellebore 'niger' Christmas Carol/Bears Foot which is in bloom just now,..however the bloom below is similar but has more green in it like the Wild Hellebore,..a young plant and grew among my others,..i will wait a spell to see how it blooms further before i can properly identify it.
I am very pleased that i have this small Hebe,..it is a cutting from the parent plant that died on me,..my own fault,..i cut it back too much,.. a lesson learned.
Earlier in the Autumn i moved two Lupine Plants from the side of the garden to the middle,..also divided the two into twelve plants,..all of them are coming along fine though i have had to use Slug Killer as due to the mild weather we have small Slugs on the rampage.
Beautifully coloured Hebe Philip, good thing you got a cutting! We've had a few days without rain here in South Wales,do you still have the flooding? Lovely sky pics.
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
@Valley Gardener,..i imagine in back of my mind its the reason i keep taking cuttings,..though its like an obsession now lol.
Lucky you with no rain for a few days,..here if its not raining its a mist,..so fine you don't really see it but when one ventures out you get wet very quickly.
We still have the flooding,..the last two images above,.. are of the landscape before the flood and how it is now,..in the two pictures below the bush or shrub on the right of the picture is in both images,..before the flood and now,..we still have about another three foot to rise yet.
Despite all the water Foxy Molly and i still have enough areas to take walks.
I know i have at least two Hedgehogs in my garden,..there may be more but i have only spotted two at any given time,..they sleep/hibernate in my shed way at the back under some shelves.
Fantastic videos of your hedgehogs,i didn't realise they could run that fast!! Cats very curious! I guess your floods are classed as watermeadows? As long as you still have nice walks with Foxy Molly.😊
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
@Valley Gardener,..lol i was surprised at the speed as well,..i happened to be having a tea break and was sitting on the garden seat with camera beside me,..looked to my left and there was the Hedgehog coming along towards me,..as they are reputed to have poor eyesight i didn't move and it looked into the camera almost touching my hand.
The second time it only realised i was there when it sniffed at my shoe lol.
They run up the footpath when disturbed and into the garden shed which is where they hibernate and live,..i can hear them at night crunching the cats dried food which i leave out for a hungry cat passing through the garden,..cats and Hedgehogs manage to exist alongside each other.
Watermeadows lol,..they will remain flooded until late Spring,..its a long wait for Foxy Molly and her favourite running areas.
