I never used to take my mobile into the garden with me ... but since my knee gave way last summer and I landed flat on my face breaking my foot, I try to remember to have it in my back pocket (on silent) if I go out there when OH isn't at home, even if it's just to throw potato peelings on the compost heap ... trying to crawl indoors on my hands and knees with a deconstructed knee and a broken foot wasn't funny ... if I'd been able to summon help it would've been a bit better.
I like mobile phones, but I use mine mainly for texting ... I can text OH, or Wonky or her brother or my brother when they're working and they can get back to me when it's convenient for them. They can also text me and if I'm busy cooking or gardening or reading or whatever I can reply when I feel like it ... That way I'm in control and the phone isn't.
Also the pharmacy text me when my repeat prescriptions are ready to collect and the library text me when a book I've ordered is in. It works for me.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
I use my mobile all the time, but only for phone calls about once a month, probably less. I much prefer texts for the same reason as you, Dove. Many many texts per day, but at my convenience and replies are at the other person's convenience - perfect. Also great for being able to go back and check details like times and places for arrangements, unlike with phone calls. And of course I use the web to check next bus times, what's in stock at the library, addresses I'm going to, maps, opening hours and a gazillion other things on the move.
If it lost its phone call function I wouldn't miss it.

I'd say I've sent about 5 text messages in my life. One of my "issues" about mobile phones is ,eg, when sitting in the staff room, folk are so busy with their heads in their phones " communicating " they seem to forget there are other , real live humans in the room with whom they can communicate .
I think the best idea is as you’ve all said - leave it off but carry it in case of need. I’ve had 4 nuisance calls since I turned it on today.😡 Another 30 degree day today and predicted for tomorrow, Hosta. I would REALLY like some rain. I’m fed up with the constant need to change hoses over to different beds. What I mean is - connecting the active host to a variety of soaker hoses in the beds.
Pat, I would REALLY like 30 degrees. I'm sitting here looking at the garden knowing it's needing work, but also knowing it's too sodden to walk on. I've managed to cut the grass twice since last September because it's so wet. Are we gardeners ever really happy ?
One of my real pet hates, is sitting in a nice restaurant, chatting away, but having to raise your voice, so that you can be heard over people chatting loudly on their phones.
I see some couples who seem to spend the whole meal staring at their phones, never even glancing at their partner.

I'm on "pay as you go" and I've only put about £15 of credit on it in 6 years.
