Plants often have a way of surprising the gardener.

For me, plants, when they've felt like it, have rooted on bright/sunny windowsills in spring, summer or autumn or on coffee tables, nowhere near direct light, in the heart of winter.  The trick is, keep trying and never give up!

  • @Zoe P2 --- did you ever positively identify that plant? I read with interest the links you posted where there was some discussion as to identity?

I felt this was, probably, the best match, Desi.

  • Thanks @Zoe P2 -- I didn't realise cordylines came in varieties other than the cabbage palm type

Bought a tray of coleus just over a week ago and some looked  a bit leggy. I put the prunings in water and they've  rooted already. Will pot up tomorrow.
Don't chuck your prunings away. You never know your luck this time of year.

Nice! I'd like to try doing this with rosemary, has it worked for anyone?

My very first time doing any kind of propagation with cuttings was at the start of June this year, using some stems I had pruned off my salvia Amistad as a sort of late Chelsea chop.

They rooted well in water (7 out of 8) after a little over two weeks, and are now growing away in pots.

Here are the smaller cuttings that are now in pots — the bigger ones have been potted on and are outside now. Another piece of the main salvia had snapped off today so I've put it in water and hope it will root as well.

Yes, I've rooted my rosemary cuttings in water and they all took and are now growing well in the garden. I think rooting in water is often overlooked, but I find it quite easy.

I pot on the cutting once there's about a centimetre of root instead of letting the roots get long in the water.
