What is this?

Zoe P2Zoe P2 Posts: 848

imageimageAbout 16 weeks ago, I was given some flowers which lasted very well.  One of them, consisting of just leaves, was still there at Christmas!  It fascinated me, so I let it be.

Soon I forgot about it but when I looked at it today, I discovered that it had grown roots!

I have no idea what it is.  Could anybody help, please!

Thank you.

I may be wrong, but I think it is a kind of banana (Musaceae), they root easily.

    Hello ZOE P

Looks like a Canna lily*** to me ; obviously your flower display contained part of a rhizome of the said plant , and this has sent out adventitious roots from a 'node' , though I may me completely off the mark here .

Carefully plant in a pot in well drained compost and keep warm and moderately bright until the Spring eventually arrives (!) .

If you've a greenhouse or a warm sunny spot in your garden , it should grow into a healthy plant . They are frost tender though , and as for flower colour , that's anyones guess .image

***PS They are relatives of the Banana family , not real lilies .

I nearly opted for Banana , or maybe a Cautleya(?); wasn't too sure from the pictures though .

D/M and Paul B3, thank you both for your help.  I shall follow your advice, Paul, and hope it flourishes!

    Looking @ C.terminalis or fruticosa , I think you're correct in your ID .

Similar growing conditions at this stage though .

I'm thinking some kind of cordyline. They have that sort of patterning on the stem when the leaves drop off.

Thank you all for your offers of help.

I googled all your suggestions and I feel rather sure its appearance is closer to "cordyline" than the others.  If it survives, I might take another picture of it, so we can all be clearer about its idendity!

Again, many thanks to you all.
