Plants that root in water

  • Hubby has rooted Honeysuckle in water. Got some on the go now. I've just cut the ends off the tradescantia, that roots well in water, and the spider plant. I will definitely try some of the others
  • Suspect I might end up doing the same. The boredom thing is real. Stick to ordinary hydrangeas for the quick fix.
  • I've failed/am currently failing with tradescantia, too...

Oh I have a tradescantia that I got on a whim at the supermarket. Maybe I'll try to propagate it just for fun. I do love the dark red leaves on it.
  • Mine's a different type. Lime green leaves and purple flowers. Sweet Kate. Not responding to my tlc.
  • I managed to root some potentilla cuttings (Abbotswood and Elizabeth) in water!!  As they were rather woody, I had feared that they wouldn't.

Today I potted them into some m/p compost.  Hopefully, they will survive the coming winter.

I did half a dozen a couple of years ago, and planted the first one in the garden this year. They were put outside in pots as soon as they rooted and have remained outside the whole time with no ill effects, not even in the weird late frosts we had this year. They grow very slowly, or mine have at any rate, but it's very satisfying! I've just split a campanula Iridescent Bells into three and ended up with four or five little bits with what could be roots on that fell off, so I'm going to bung them in water and see if they take off.
  • Excellent!

    Good luck with the campanulas.

I don't know why anyone would bother rooting potentilla in water. They're among the easiest shrubs to propagate - they layer readily too.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
