How does the hardness of the water affect success?

We have hard water and I've rooted cuttings in it.
Walnut doesn't work in water, but I can't get them going in soil either.. 😕

I’ve got a nice sweet chestnut tree growing from a save one at Christmas.
I don’t know if it will ever produce nuts?

Daughter gave me a cutting from a passionflower plant at the end of June. It’s been in water since then, and just checked yesterday.

    Endeavour to persevere @Uff 😉
I'm thinking that in the current drought situation, rooting in water might be the best option. At least you don't have to worry about keeping your cuttings watered!
