[...] The only reliable way to tell is by looking at their genitals and I've no great urge to spend my time looking at moth willies :#

Gorgeous photo, WE. Perfectionism is the death of creativity. Celebrate what you have got there.

What is it? It looks like a fly you'd get on eBay
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Oh yeah I forgot that bit. It's a ruby tailed wasp which is a parasite of solitary bee nests and I imagine why they seem to hang around my bug hotels. An interesting blog on the mixed feelings this causes here https://markavery.info/2020/06/25/guest-blog-i-wish-i-had-swatted-it-by-jonathan-wallace/

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I found one of these trapped in my living room on the vertical blinds this morning, presumably having come in yesterday evening without me noticing.  Quite sluggish and not keen to fly even when out in fresh air.  I popped it into the wildflower patch, hope it recovered.

You could have tried the sugar syrup thing to see if it perked up.  Works for bees.  Maybe not for butterflies.

I’m sure he will be fine 🦋
