    Four of these goth moths turned up at the light trap last night. The Black Rustic. They're pitch black apart from the little white splotches, but if you turn a light on them the pattern gleams like some kind of expensive velvet.

    If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

    I saw this mosquito in the bathroom. (Culex pipiens?) I couldn't tell if it was a cranefly, which gives a sense of how large it was. With legs extended it was one inch long - 2.5cm - which is the length of the body of the bee hummingbird. Half the legs are shown in the pic.



     

    There are 34 known species of mosquito in the UK. They do play an important role as pollinators. (!) Not all species need blood to lay eggs and of those who do, not all feed on humans.

    You'll note that the above does not have any strong black and white banding. Other species do have these distinguishing features - they look so differently arranged also.

    Found this crane fly asleep in my Pennisetum this morning.
