This landed on my hand today, I think its a clear winged hawk moth?
Lucky you! More specifically it's the Hummingbird Clearwing. I've only seen it 2 or 3 times in the wild in my part of France.

    What a stunning moth. :o

I spotted a large bee-fly (Bombylius major) in the garden which is a new one on the patch list.

Oh, and last weekend I came across a Ruby Tiger moth catepillar on the edge of my lawn. I've not seen the moth itself so I'm going to have to keep an eye out for one of those.

A (fairly newly emerged, by the look of it) Small Tortoiseshell just landed in front of me. :)

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Not so easy to capture them, those Bombylius critters. They keep moving around. Managed to capture a pic of a half-asleep specimen some years ago!

Maybe you're trying too hard. ;) (lovely photo though) I took this pic this afternoon. The poor guy was stuck in the greenhouse, I stuck out my hand to guide him to the door an he just landed on my finger. Maybe he was just impressed with my gardener's manicure :#

I saw a congregation of these lovely green tiger beetles while out walking the family yesterday. As alway I had the wrong lens on the camera  :(  They have a lovely iridescence and fearsome jaws if you can get close enough to see. This bare earth bank gets a nice baking in the afternoon sun so they may return and I'll be more prepared next time.
