Far too hot to do 'real' gardening. My plan is to go to the GC, get a bit of lunch and buy some plants for the new pond - the only planting I can do without the need for lugging watering cans about. Having to splash about in the water to do it is an added bonus .
So if anyone has suggestions for sun loving aquatics (other than a water lily - already on the list) I'm looking for ideas.
I've got a few oxygenator plants (hornwort) in there already well established (this pond has been a work in progress for a year now). I also already have a good newt, frog and toad population and there are dragonflies, chasers and darters around too. The pond is about 5m x 5m, up to 1200m deep in the middle with wide shallow shelves, lots of stone (although we've not finished the edges yet, so lots of stone work still to do). But the newts need some plant cover in this weather so time to get a few starter plants in .....
Gardening on the edge of Exmoor, in Devon

I think I'm having Hosta's share of sleep. . . eleven hours!!!
LP. thanks for the road information. I will let daughter know. The A 70 between here and the motorway seems to have parts of it closed on a regular basis involving a long detour.
Raisingirl, are you hiring a Cousteau family member to do the planting in your 4000 foot deep pond? (I know you really meant 1200mm!)
Too hot for me - slept under a single sheet last night and am doing 10 mins worth of work followed by 20 mins rest today. Strawberries loving it though - will be none left by Wimbledon week which will be a first!
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

've had the van windows open. It's divine, but no chance of seeing the sea.
