Meant to say - Hosta - can you check the relative amounts of electricity used, from when you moved in to now?  The bills should help you work it out, even if they don't tell you in kWh.

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

LilyP, I didn't mean to imply doubt about the electricity etc in Russia - I meant that it seemed impossible for ex DIL to grasp that it had to be paid for in the UK, and that the amount used in a drafty Georgian cottage on the North Sea coast needed to be controlled image

Hosta - not paranoia - all possibilities need exploring. Good luck.

I'm still posting from my phone 'cos my laptops taking its time to install updates ...

Back from village hairdresser looking much tidier.

I'm going to the Malvern Show on Friday with friends from Malvern who we will be staying with, BM.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

No further progress on potager sleeper front so am concentrating on the perfumed garden project.  This requires chipped bark by the tonne.   Trawling thru websites as the prices range form 20€for 1 cubic metre delivered in bulk to 6€+ for a 50 litre bag.  Waiting for bulk suppliers to send estimates but we will go and buy the timber and weed proof membrane we need.

I may just go and buy every old bedframe I can find for the potager!

Cold and draughty here but the sun has finally appeared so maybe it'll get warmer.   Wanted to put my toms out to harden off but can't.

Hosta - get it all checked out to find the "leak".  You may be in for a sizable refund.

Dove - hope you get that loo fixed.

Busy - have a safe journey across and a great time at Malvern.  Lovely setting and great plants to buy plus local produce.  Do you have a car fridge?  Halfords do them.   Some very good restaurants and pub food around Malvern too.

Liri - your Russians sound entertaining.

Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

We used to holiday at a hotel in Egypt that was very popular with Russians. Lots of Middle aged Russian men with their 20 something girl friends who used to come down to breakfast dressed like they were ready for a porn shot. But they were very chatty if you could get over the language barrier and if you didn,t go by first impressions they were very good company. My boys were a lot younger then and they seemed very taken with my youngest lads long curly hair. I don't know why as they must have ironed their own hair for hours to get it as straight and flat as they seemed to favour it.

Hosta - my nephew had endless problems with his electricity supply when he rented - went on for years. Even after he moved to his own house with his partner, the problem was lingering. It was a faulty meter or a new one, and they (Scottish Power) were dragging their heels over the payments being sorted, readings being disputed etc, but I'm not even sure if he's got it completely resolved. He's now moved again - I must ask him if he ever got it soretd!

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thank one and all for concerns and advice.

The nice man has been. Same guy as last year. " I don't know why they've sent me, I'm wasting your time"

I asked him if he'd mind telling me how much his bill is :

" There are  seven  of us and the kids always have at least one TV on and endless consuls  etc hoovering up electricity , our washing machine is on at least once a day, as is our dishwasher and we pay £50 a month"

And they're asking us for £158 a month!!!!

Posty arrived just before he did with a letter from SSE " time to upgrade to a smart meter" I'm having one installed next Wednesday so we can keep an eye on it 24/7 for any anomalies.

I take it you are on the best tariff you can get ........... image

Did you mention the barns to the electricity chap? They need to check what's going on with the power line and any spurs off it  ...  I know someone who had a similar problem ... the downstairs flat had tapped into their power supply and were using it to light and heat a room where they were growing 'herbs' imageimage

no idea Dove, best tariff with our supplier, but I once tried to find an alternative and decided it was a minefield, so gave up.
