  • There are certainly different styles of punctuation - when working on legal documents years ago there was hardly any punctuation used other than full stops - language had to be clear enough to be unambiguous without commas and colons.

Nowadays the style of punctuation I learned in grammar school would be considered heavy-handed by editors of contemporary literature.  The old style will probably make a reappearance at some time - these things go in cycles - but  a 'light touch' is certainly what is favoured today.

Careful Dove - a 'light touch' in relation to  Trump is a totally different beast altogether.....image image image

  • Don't get me started, Fairy!  One of the current 'offenders' is the use of 'I could care less' as used across the pond instead of 'I couldn't care less' as used here.  Two opposing viewpoints, surely? image

Punctuation is a code that we can  use to give us more control over how a text is read - provided that the reader knows the code as well.

Even his relations on Lewis have disowned him apparently. When approached by the usual meedja hoping for a scoop, they were politely sent packing. Just as well his rellies aren't Weedgies - they'd just have been told to eff off...  image

Bob - what's that saying about nations divided by a common language.....image

I was reading Regina Spektor's twitter page yesterday as I was looking for some info for my daughter. Of course, there was a lot of election stuff. I read a few comments, but one of the most disturbing was by someone on a bus and a load of schoolgirls got on and asked this woman why she wasn't sitting at the back now that Trump was president....

I'll leave you to work it out. Not difficult .....image

    THOUGHT FOR TODAY.

NOT A PLEASANT MAN TO KNOW, IT WOULD APPEAR, BUT AT LEAST HE WAS AMERICAN.

    See original post

The first moron as President of the USA was appointed in 2001.  Trump may be many things, but he certainly doesn't fit that description.  (the quote unfortunately hasn't incorporated the original image from pansyface's post.) which was to the effect the the Whitehouse will be adorned by a downright moron.

Sadly, it's unlikely to be an isolated instance, Fairy.

How very British to turn political commentary into a debate about punctuation, grammar and manners.  Wonderful stuff.

There's a thing going round on Facebook about how the poster will miss the Obama family's tenure at the White House - no affairs, no mistresses, no scandals, no impeachment and unfailing courtesy and good manners.
