Having worked in a US hospital, where it appeared to me at least, that if you could not afford insurance, then you did not get health care, I am alarmed by the proposed changes. As an outsider I thought Obama care was a massive step forward.

Re: abortion, I have to agree with Obelixx, I don't think I should have a say, it must be a woman's right to choose.

  • If you want fewer pregnancy terminations you need free and easily accessible contraceptives for all.  I understand that Hillary Clinton  worked hard to try to make this available to all women.  I don't know whether she succeeded.

  • you can get contraception as easily as you can buy a pack of cigarettes   planned parenthood clinics give them out.obama care premiums have gone up so significantly that people are choosing to pay the fine for not having any insurance at 1,000 dollars instead of paying a premium of 4 to 5 thousand dollars. some areas of the u.s the premiums will go 162 percent in january, that is why people want it repealed

    Great post pansyface.

Debra- before I had my children, I worked for twenty years, often 60 or 70 hours (or more) a week with one day off. I paid tax, council tax and NI, but I rarely used a lot of the 'facilities' it paid for.  I had debates with a couple of people who didn't see why they should pay for schools when they didn't have children. I said  'well, why should I pay for libraries if I don't use them? Or social services when I don't use them?' They didn't have an answer. My parents paid for education that we didn't use because we went to a private school - so my Dad paid twice.

I've rarely had to use a hospital - apart from having my children, and rarely visit a doctor, but that may change in years to come. That's the point. That's how it works here. The workshy and downright lazy will always be there, and so will the hardworking. Nothing is perfect, but we have a system which is there to help us all, as pansyface has so eloquently described.

We all pay into the pot to help everyone, regardless of their situation. Because at some point - we all use at least one of those services  image

  • i am sorry to hear that you are ill but glad that you have peace of mind.we have social security and medicare that we paid into for our retirement and health care which pays for 80 percent of your medical bills but we also buy insurance to pay for what ever medicare does not pay for. we also pay into unemployment insurance it comes out of our pay checks it seems to be very similar to what you have.  . obama care is for working people who are not offered insurance at their jobs and the working poor so the premium price depends on how much money you make, basically it is the young paying for the old and no young people want to pay the premiums, so they take the fine, which is cheaper.

  • fairy girl i too sent my children to private schools and paid twice.

    P.S. Hilary got more votes

    Yay for democracy

    See original post

Sure they have what to us is a strange system with the electoral college, but over here a political party can get several million votes and end up with no seats in parliament.  I don't think we are in any position to preach about democracy!

Even if Hillary had won she would have had the same problems Obama faced with both the Senate and Congress having more Republicans than Democrats, and voting down bills all the time.

Absolutely brilliant pansyface, beautifully written. That should be how the system works, sadly I am not sure that it does anymore.

How do you think it would be playing out now had that gone the other way - if Trump had won more votes and lost the election?
