Pansy - I agree that politically there are many differences but there is a common sentiment; the austerity that has followed the financial crisis has hit hard at people who see those who caused the crisis - the investment bankers and the political 'system' - apparently get away scott free. The problem with 'smug' is it tends to make people confronted with want to hit out. That anger is visceral and, whilst understandable, not always rational. Democracy allows for people to vote against something they don't want as much as for something they do and that is where I suspect the commonality lies.

debra - many of the people protesting are confronting directly the possibility that hard won freedoms that they hold very precious are about to be taken away. You should not dismiss those fears too lightly.

Actually, Pansyface, the coal agreement came after Belgium and Italy did a post war deal on coal for workers and France and Germany then joined in and made it a wider entity.   That's why so many Italians found themselves working in Walloon coal mines and still have strong communities there today.

The USA went through the whole Union thing in the 19th century because they were all emigrants making a new life and wanted security and stability.

In Europe, there are communities, cultures, nations going back for millennia.  The move to freedom of movement and trade has been good for most who were already within it but now it's become too attractive to outsiders feeling political or economic difficulties or war at home.   If they could get a boat from Libya to the US I'm sure they would but the EU is so much closer and has all that lovely social security the US lacks.

I don't see how you reverse increasing globalisation by trying to close very pervious borders and I don't see the UK or the USA filling seasonal jobs like fruit picking from its own peoples or, indeed, some of the high end jobs requiring certain skill sets for which the education system does not provide sufficient candidates.

  • the fact that they burned the flag that young boys died for is not acceptable and over h,clinton who lied to the face of the mothers whos sons came home in body bags is not to be forgotten. they are afraid they will be sent back to their country, they do not have hard won freedoms they have to be a citizen of the u.s to have them.    my uncle was one of those men who came from italy to england in the 50s. the only job he could get was working in the coal mines . he left and became a u.s citizen

debra - consider the laws which are likely to be repealed once Trump makes his appointment  to the Supreme Court. That is what concerns me about his election victory. Too few people appreciate the power of the American Supreme Court.

Pansy - I was not for Brexit. I can see why some people are.

Debra - I don't think all the people protesting are immigrants.

  • you are right, he wants to replace antonin scalia with someone who is a conservative .she would have put a liberal in that position she is in favor of partial birth abortion up to the day a baby would be born ,to me that is nothing short of murder, he wants to repeal and replace obama care. if it were up to me i would give amnesty to all that are here, and from the day he takes office put in place a strong border and then if you want to stay here it must be legal and it has to be controlled.  our taxes on long island are very expensive. i pay 10,000 dollars in school tax alone and have no kids in school

Nobody, especially not men, should have the right to tell a woman what to do with her body.  It is inhuman to let unwanted pregnancies go beyond a week or two given we now have the morning after pill and safe ways to avoid pregnancy in the first place.  Unfortunately these don't work for women who are forced or who discover their baby is likely to have problems they cannot deal with so a plan B is needed..

debra - Roe vs Wade was passed in 1973 giving women the right to abortion. Why repeal it after all these years. . . . it will lead to illegal abortions. Abortion is a matter of personal choice.

What will replace Obama care?   More money for the Insurance companies, people selling their homes to pay for health care?

We all pay tax to fund education. . . . this is for the good of all.

  • i agree with what you are saying, but if you ever saw the photos of partial birth abortion and my daughter is a nurse. you soon would change your mind. their has to be a time limit. not repeal of roe vs wade but their has to be a middle ground,  women have rights with their own bodies, but so do babies. they want to replace obama care with insurance  that would promote competition, no state lines to prevent buying from different states where insurance is cheaper their if you dont have money in this country your coverage is medicaid

debra - I too was a nurse many years ago before abortion was legal here. I have attended spontaneous abortions and been overawed at the development of a three or fourth month foetus

However I have also tended to the results of illegal abortions which is why I am pro-choice.
