Gold finches and Bull finches came back last week. along with the old favourites, Blackbirds, robins, wagtail, Nut hatch, sparrow, wood pigeon, chaffinch, tits of all sizes and colours, pheasants.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
I am always amazed at how large those parakeets are. They can't get at my bird feeder but do swing on the washing line. I see they are being called posh pigeons now.
They are filling out South-East England. The gangs are so crazy-squawking, like they are rolling out of the pub at midnight. @Cagzo, seriously which? Jonny, what a God-awful thought - imagining if the bloomin' parakeets learned to talk, parroting back what they heard as they perch in the trees. There is a whole novel / film/ spy plot in there. I can feel a Putin conspiracy coming on. Lol.
I've made many trips to watch Londons Ring-necked Parakeets for over 30 years now. Sadly not everyone likes them and a cull has been suggested. This took place on a colony of Monk Parakeets a few years ago and they killed the lot.
From what I can see, the Monks parakeet posed a risk because the build huge nests on electricity pylons, about the size of a car. The ring necks are out-competing other birds but I don't think a cull is seriously on the cards. I think Defra is worried about a population explosion. It's easier to control things now than wait until there's nothing to be done.
