Just sitting drinking my coffee and watching a pair of buzzards through the binoculars, diving and ducking, and then noticed a dark blob in front of a cloud. Sat watching heart in mouth, it got closer, it turned, flapped its wings, totally intent on watching the ground. I knew what it was but wanted proof. It came closer again and I knew for certain, it was a golden eagle. Oh, joy.
They have been tracked down here often but it's only the third time I've seen one here. I saw one Christmas before last when I drove up into the Moffat hills.
Lesson learned I must keep the camera set up on the tripod in the dining room, ready and waiting for the next time. A bit about the project up here.
There are definitely some in your neck of the woods @Uff. I saw one when returning from a hill in the Cairngorms. I caught it out the corner of my eye, swooping round in the adjacent field, and disappearing behind the hedge, but I wasn't on a suitable bit of road where I could have stopped and had a proper look - and maybe a photo, unfortunately. You can tell when it's not just a buzzard, or similar, which are quite small. I don't think people realise just how big they are.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
We had buzzards overhead this afternoon and they are one of the biggest birds around here. I remember seeing my first golden eagle soaring high above the Arrochar Alps many years ago, just magnificent.
Yes - they're very common here @steephill. We get them overhead a lot in summer. No matter how often I see them, whether here or on a hill, I still love that feeling of having them there, and hearing them. Never seen any sign of an eagle in the Arrochar hills - that's pretty unusual, but I did come across a very nicely camouflaged ptarmigan along the road on Beinn an Lochain, who was clearly 'off course'. Not their usual neck of the woods at all.

They're also at Formby (North Merseyside) so maybe a bit nearer.
I play with plants and soil and sometimes it's successful

I wondered if that might be the case Fairygirl.
