I'm afraid I don't have a photo but I noticed 4 goldfinch on the old lavender flower spikes. They appeared to be eating the seeds. Would this be correct? There's no greenfly there.

Yes. I read that of you leave the seed heads on they are a gourmet food for finches.

I've seen finches taking the seeds out of lavender.  It's one of the excuses I have for not trimming them until Spring.  The garden is in its wildlife habitat state. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.  Most of the little birds except the robins appear to be missing. We had 7 blackbirds, and loads of Wood pigeons, but the sunflower seed feeders  appear to be ignored.

I'm pretty poor at bird identification and don't think I've seen one of these in our garden before. Is it a young chaffinch?

    It's a Jay. Lovely birds :)
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I am delighted to have just seen a little wren hoping amongst my roses. I don't recall ever having seen a wren in my garden before. Yeay. It made my morning.

They are tiny, quick, and fleeting I have found @Fire 🙂 I have a blue tit box that a male stuffs every year, but sing as he might a female has yet to choose it.
