It's strange @fidgetbones we don't loose Robins over winter, it's always in the breeding season. You see them around for the first clutch coming for food, then you realise that after the second set of eggs they seem to disappear.
Pruned some laurel hedging this morning, and was shredding all the bits, when TuTu, our friendly pigeon, landed on my head! Gave me quite a shock! I had to down tools and go in to get a handful of peanuts.
Talking of robins, ours appear and disappear throughout the year, we had a baby here the other week but he's gone again now.
As for turtle doves, haven't seen any for ever! We've got tons of collared doves, and had a rock dove, but no turtle ones. You're very lucky if you even spot them!
@steephill. If he/she likes cooking apples he would be most welcome on my allotment/garden later in the year when literally dozens (and more) cover the place. Very old tree and not very nice apples. Probably end up with a bad stomach.
Our deer seems to prefer geranium leaves, welsh poppy seed heads, aquilegia seed heads, purple loosestrife, and raspberries. She does nibble apple leaves at the right height.
