Thanks. A honey bee nest?  I would love to have honey bee hives but don't have space. Instead I decided to set up conditions for other types of bees. I'm delighted that it's working. About 85% of gardens front and back are designed for polinators.

    splendid caterpillar, Hippophae  :)

well done on the bees, Fire. We have lots around because they nest in the old cob walls. If you stand at that end of the house on a warm day, the whole wall appears to be gently humming. We had a hornet nest in there last year. Amazing creatures but inconvenient near the house because they are so attracted to the lights in the evening.

OH saw a lesser spotted woodpecker bathing on the edge of our spring overflow this morning  :) We often see the greater ones about, but that's the first time either of us has seen a lesser one.

And we found a hedgehog - also hardly ever see them here. But this one was really big, so clearly they are about - just staying out of sight  B)

  • Two photos of a five-legged Pisaura mirabilis on her nest, with hatchlings hiding in the corner, and one with its eggs.

  • I love spiders, they are fantastic creatures and so underrated.  They make a tasty meal for the birds and in turn are wonderful aphid eaters.

Welcome visitors to compost bin! Sorry photo quality not too good but they disappeared as soon as I took the lid off!

Brilliant, Nick. Bet you were thrilled  :)

I love Alan's spiders too. Great photos.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
