    Morning all/afties Pat image

Hissing down here - you must be catching a little dry spot Joyce! The thunder and lightning's supposed to be later this morning so it will be when I'm at work image

My new bedroom's quite cool as there's nothing above it, and no real ceiling insulation ...might not be so handy in winter though  image

Enjoy your day Yvie. I'm always astonished at the amount Grans and Grandpas do these days. I had no help with my girls as my Mum wasn't well, and I'd never have expected it anyway, but I do know people who get a lot of help...and don't seem to appreciate it....image

I'll have a quick look round before I head off - have a good day everyone image

Hot last night but not too humid so slept OK if not as long as I'd have liked.    Lovely day so far with clear blue skies.   I'm on dining chair sanding and painting for Possum's apartment.   That'll be fun in this weather but at least I can sand them outside before it gets too hot.

Our house buyers came round last night to measure up for electric powered security shutters for the house and bars for the barn doors.   Have told them we've never had a problem but they feel the need and they're for the north side so will be an added layer of insulation I suppose.   He's promised to keep on feeding the birds for me as they are buying it for the rural surroundings and space.

His FIL came too as he's doing the work - retired electrician - and approves of our fuse boxes and tells me he has a holiday home at the beach town nearest our new house so we must meet up at his pal's seafood restaurant.  Yeah!

Being on our own here when I had Possum there was no help at all from parents and my mum had estranged herself anyway.   However we had a network of English speaking mums and babies and toddlers that et once a week in each others' homes for play and chat and that was a lifeline.  We organised all sorts of excursions to play parks and so on in the summers.   Still in touch with two lots gone home to Oz and one lot gone to France.

Looking forward to pics of Wightwick gardens.  I love Arts and Crafts gardens and how lovely that they allow dogs.  None of the RHS gardens do which is a shame for those of us responsible enough to keep them on a lead and pick up poos.

Have a good day, whatever you're up to.

Fairy thunder on it's way. So dark here the street lights have come back on. Quite a show going on. Lots of lightning and loud thunder.

Yvie and Fairy; I pretty much grew up at my grandparents so know how special it is to have two wonderful people who can devote time to you when father is always at work and mother has a new baby to care for, they never made anything feel like a chore even when I "helped" clean the house or weeded the garden; I'm sure I must have made things worse! No wearing yourself out though Yvie; I hope at the very least you have air conditioning for all those miles.

Our family are now 100 miles away so I can't see us getting help with the dog - closest thing I'll ever have to a child! Mind you at least unlike my cousin who lived abroad I won't fear the grandmothers just calling from the airport having decided that they would stay for MONTHS and want a ruling hand on how the first born is raised in a country where they didn't know anyone / thing so we're also reliant on new mum for entertainment even when all she wanted was to sit in her pants with the other new hot and exhausted mums. Small mercy for knackered ovaries!image

Got a text from the boss  yesterday to say I'm out doing a fire safety session for 75 children. I hope they have strong immune systems because this cold is proving awful. I didn't think cold germs could survive hot temperatures?? Surely yesterday's sweat fest should have killed it all off.image

I hope you all have your buckets ready to fill with rain from the impending thunder storms; my water button is almost empty!

Indeed Clari.  Some of the Oz mums descended for 3 month or more for the birth of their grandchildren and then wouldn't drive on the wrong side so needed running after between nappy changes and stuff.

Sorry your cold is lingering but I actually think the bug going round at the mo is one of the worst.  Took nearly 2 weeks for my recent cold to shift.   Hope it clears up soon.

Seems we might get some stormy activity but not much rain later on.  Set to stay dry and cooler tomorrow which is good for all the Belgian National Day parades and malarky.

  • Morning all! I did eventually drift off to sleep around 1am. Up at 7, but feeling sluggish. I've only really managed to tidy the kitchen and take the recycling out so far. Any gardening will have to wait until early evening I think, it looks like we are going to mostly avoid the rain and storms here so the heat is here to stay throughout the day.

Morning all, should be slightly cooler today, there are clouds.

Daughter 1. lives 2h20m from me, son 1. lives 5h away, daughter 2. 1h20m, son 2. 30mins. I have babysat, helped when new babies arrive, helped with house moves and decorating. My mother never babysat as she wasn't a good driver and my my father didn't like her being away. But when we moved to France they came for a week to help and after that they came twice a year for a week each time.

When I was young and had small children I didn't go out to work and it was the same for most of my friends, but now my daughters and all their friends work. Life seems more expensive and complicated now, mobile phone and internet subscriptions, 2nd cars, expensive housing etc.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Bushman, the thunder and lightning started half an hour ago but we've got drizzle rather than rain. Very claggy.

  • I caved and went outside for a bit. Only did some dead heading was quite pleasant in the shady bed. I think it might be marginally cooler outside than in at the moment! Thermostat says the dining room (shady side of the house in the morning) is:
