    Thanks Fran. I’ll keep a lookout for that program. It usually takes a couple of years before we get them in Oz. 😁

  • Some lovely crafts on here. I think we all need something to do in the winter months.
    I enjoy knitting,would love to be able to crochet,but painting is my biggest love.

    I first had a go at crochet with one of those monthly/weekly magazines that teaches you as you go. I got totally lost and fell out with it. I didn’t understand any of it, then a watched a YouTube video and it all made sense.

     I found that using the American terms rather than English terms easier to understand. For example, American terms, single crochet 1 loop, double crochet 2 loops, treble crochet 3 loops.
     English terms is just confusing, no single crochet at all, double crochet 1 loop, treble crochet 2 loops, double treble 3 loops.
    I think I’ve managed to made both terms sound confusing sorry.

    I watched ‘crochet with clare’  who has recently changed her username from bobwilson123. She is Australian and uses American terms, she is very easy to follow but you can also stop and restart the video as many time as you want  :)

  • Thankyou for that @SherwoodArrow.
    I made a small start with a baby blanket. Knitted in Stocking stitch with a moss Stitch border,it looked very unfinished,so I persevered with my one and only crochet hook,and looked for fan shaped pattern to finish it. I found that quite easy to follow on You Tube,even though it was more of a "frill"!
    I have noted the ones you recommend,so I will have another crack at it from casting on. Is that what you call it?😊
    I have to agree about the American way,easier to understand,but American knitting patterns go right over my head,cant teach an old dog etc etc😊😊

    @Doghouse Riley Those paintings are excellent. Maybe you will take it up again when the weather doesn't allow you to play golf.  :)

    Thanks for that, but I can't see me finding (or making) the time, apart from keeping on top of the garden,  I've two vinyl jukeboxes I "play with." Two jukebox wall boxes on which I can select mp3 tracks on iPods, to play through my vintage hi-fi. My Yamaha Tyros 5 "leccy piano"and my tenor sax.
    I'm into film noir and I watch a lot of sport on TV. I also have several jobs around the house to do as my wife has MS.

    My sister has promised to teach me to crochet - I only want to do granny squares, nothing too fancy - but we haven't found time yet.

    My mother-in-law was a very keen,  "crocheteer." We've a complete set of six place setting mats  she made for us, plus two large ones for the centre of the table.
    They are very impressive.

    They've not used very much.

    Times change, "entertaining" amongst our family and friends, is just the choice of the restaurant.

    @Valley Gardener
    You generally start crochet by doing a chain (so no casting on as such :) ) or if your working in the round you can do a magic circle  :).
    I was given most of my hooks from my great granny but i have seen loads in charity shops, there mostly under £1 so not expensive if you don't get on with it.
    You blanket sounds great though, some of the first things i crocheted were rubbish but i love them just the same, its about learning and a progression in your skills will be shown in the items you make.

    When you've taken the time to make something i will alway value it more than anything bought  <3 .

    @LG_
    I really do recommend YouTube to help you learn to crochet. As i said before you can stop and restart the video as many times as you like so nobody knows how many mistakes you make  :)
    There are loads of crochet teachers on there so you can pick one you like.

    I love crocheting and make all sorts of things and probably buy way to much yarn to put in my stash.
     I am starting to think that buying yarn and crocheting are two separate hobbies  :D
    I also do lots of other crafts, i sewing both hand and machine, cross stich, card making and latch hook rug making  :).
