I am trying to learn crochet. I wish I had listened to my Nan! So far I am rubbish. It took me ages just to master the little slip knot for step 1! I have made a little chain but I’m not great. I am hoping it will come with practice and some muscle-memory. Will it? Or do you need ‘the gene’ ??
Any good tips or links to videos gratefully received!
@AuntyRach I would love to learn too. Back in the 70s a friend showed me how to do a square, which seemed very easy then, and I made a long colourful waist coat ( very hippy) but everything I learned then has gone. I know there are some really good teachers on YouTube,I need a very slow one. As you say it's hard enough to get the first loop! Nothing like having someone sitting next to you to learn.🙂🙂
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
You do not need the gene @AuntyRach. Difficult to recommend a video, there's so much on you tube. You have reminded me of my granny who taught me how to crochet, I have a thousand questions for her, I wished I asked then.
I’ve just been downloading some crochet magazines on our online library. After two attempts to knit myself a hat, and getting the size all wrong, I thought I might try to crochet one instead. I haven’t found a suitable pattern yet, but each issue has a helpful glossary at the back, with a guide to the abbreviations, and photos of all the stitches. I’ll let you know how I get on!
Crochet with Clare seems to be a nice slow one to learn a Granny Square on You Tube. I'm having difficulty holding the wool in the left hand. It's all being done with my right. It might be due to knitting for so long.

As I have said before I learned to crochet by watching Crochet with Clare, she is very patient and easy to follow. She uses American terms, which make more sense than English terms. I have made lots of items following her tutorials.

I'd love to be able to crochet too. My mum did try to teach me, but I just couldn't master it.

Failure is always an option.
