For a base coat if I need one( sometimes the stones are very pretty in their own right)
I get tubes of Acrylic. For painting on the design I get the small crafters Acrylic, you can get them in places like The Range or get them from Amazon, about £1.30 ish.

To do dotted ones you can buy Dotting tools,or I use the end of a pencil,or chopstick.
The varnish I use is exterior gloss, its nice if they can go in or out of doors.
I will take a pic of a natural stone,so you can see what I mean, also the paints so you know what youre looking for.
    Will put pics on later.

  • "Pebeo" do a fabulous gold in a tube too.

  • Example of painting directly on to a stone. Sometimes you can find some with an unusual appearance and its a shame to cover them in a base coat.

  • I've got acrylics in tubes which I use to paint fridge magnets which I've made from scratch, chopsticks ,pebbles up around my pond, varnish and loads of patience. I haven't got that lovely gold acrylic , it's a must to add that extra wow ! Plenty of time on my hands will go up my garden shortly( our garden is fairly steep with lots of levels and steps) but Amazing views over the Valley opposite. Wouldn't be anywhere else here in S.E Wales. Love your pebbles ,just found the one my 6 yr old Grand-daughter did , she's the Artistic one  will post now. Thanks for help got me hooked now !
  • Thankyou @Aunty Rach.
@Valleysgirl those fridge magnets are lovely, youve obviously got some small brushes. My G Daughter likes to do the ladybirds, the garden is dotted with various bees and fairy houses. You wont regret getting the gold.

Someone gave me a sack of cobbles many years ago. I've never got around to doing anything with them. I might fish one out and have a go.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Talking of painting on stone - in the park we have a Victorian water fountain, alas no longer plumbed in, with inscriptions on both sides.  These are incised into the marble and painted in gold.  One side has weathered well and is clearly legible, but on the other side the gold has partly worn away and it's difficult to read.  What paint could we use to refresh it, that would be bright and weather-proof?
  • You could try "Humbrol" enamel paint which goes on most surfaces,or failing that a good Acrylic gold, with some exterior varnish on top, probably 2 coats. The one I bought for the outside nativity scene, was by "Pebeo" excellent quality, with a glowing sheen.
    Got it on Amazon.
