I know you're supposed to with tomatoes. When you pot them on, you pot them about halfway down the stem.

I'd love to know about other plants.

You can prick out spindly seedlings, drop then in almost up the seed leaves, especially cosmos and tomatoes, as the will grow roots up the stem, making a sturdier plant.

Curl them round in the pot if need be, it won't hurt them.

Hi lorna and sparkles, yes you can plant leggy seedlings deeper when potting on.

I did last year after reading about it on here, I think it works for most things especially tomatoes. I'm pretty sure Lyn recommended planting them up to the shoulders, which I think is the first set of leaves.

Edit. You beat me to it while I was still typing Lyn, I'm so slow.

Thank you Lyn and Kitty, I will do that for some of the seedlings I have, as some of them have gone a bit leggy.  God I am so glad for this site as I would be totally lost if I couldn't ask all these questions. Thank you so much. image

Thanks Lyn, I have been gardening for quiet a few years, but it's only been the past 3-4 years that I have been growing flowers from seed, and I am still learning new things, I am behind on growing my seeds as hubby has been in hospital and I'm back and forwards to the vet's, but things are beginning to calm down now, I just hope I'm not to late to plant some seeds. I have sown some but still have quiet a few to do. So think I may be asking plenty of questions. image

I'm inspired by this thread (and very relieved, I thought I'd sown too many seeds, but seeing the photos made me realize that I'm way behind image), so I'm going to sow some more tonight. I only have south- and north-facing windowsills, so it's a bit tricky, but at least I bought one of those plastic minigreenhouses to put on my patio for later.

Hooray! And hooray for GW forum image

Aster - I don't think you're behind. I went by the packets and planted way too early, so mine are all really leggy! We live and learn.

Going to start hardening them off today and sow some annuals to put in the growhouse. I must have the narrowest windowsills in the UK - nothing will fit on them, except the kitchen window, which is already full!

Sowed my first seeds last Wednesday (I know I'm lazy) but I'm not worried, they will catch up eventually.

After looking back at last years thread I had trayfuls on April 4th.  I bumped up the old thread for newbies as I found it so useful, I'm no expert but was egged on to start the new one. Bit embarrassing that I've not got much to show. image image
