At the allotment shop had a nice free hot cross bun to go with the tea, done a small bit of digging on plot soil still very muddy, saw a sparrow check out the house by looking from the front of the box into the hole both male and female

I checked my stored gladioli and dahlias. Most are looking good. A number have started to grow which is a bonus.
Going to plot tomorrow and plan to start planting out broad beans, spuds and sow more seeds.

Went to the plot but it was very cold so have put off planting out spuds and decided to harden off broad beans, planted most of the gladioli and some African Daisy's sown in the autumn and planted out more garlic.

A productive day, made some supports for pea's and beans.

Checked and watered seedlings in GH. Lots of flower seedlings but germination has been a bit erratic particularly with veg. Broad beans, peas and lettuce very good but kale, sprouts and swede a tad bit disappointing and some stuff has still to show-leeks, chard, beetroot, I'm sure there's more...

Are you guys having better luck and what is doing well.

  • I feel an enormous sense of relief when fruit bushes start putting leaves out. I still worry they've died over winter. But they seem to be doing well in the wet, particularly blackcurrant. Leaves appearing at the base of raspberries. Someone kindly gave me a split of their rhubarb last autumn and that's romping away, though I think I'm supposed to let it be in its first year.
I followed @Allotment Boy and planted out broad beans yesterday. Everything else is still in the greenhouse or on window sills. Hoping to put potatoes and onion sets in next weekend as it's supposed to warm up during the coming week.
Strawberry patch looking a bit sorry for itself, and I think the garlic I planted in November is suffering in the damp conditions. Hopefully it will revive once it warms up.

I need to do the strawberry patch

Zoomer lettuce not doing that great one lot of seeds - maybe had them too long, other seed of lettuce that I got a few weeks ago doing well

broad beans coming through now in peat pots and tested peas in loo roll tubes and they are doing well now so put into plastic gh, sweetpeas look ok not all seeds germinated and mesembryanthemum - living daisy small little seedlings

Been to the plot today done a lot more digging, added a lot of horse manure to the apple tree area - more plot holders about today as dry

I know what you mean Paul!! My redcurrants and blueberries have signs of life but I'm worried about by raspberries still!
I potted up the largest of my first batch of Roma tomatoes today. Everything else is still yet to develop a true leaf. I do wish my plants would hurry up and grow faster! I don't have a greenhouse so I've just ordered one of these 4 tier plastic things so hopefully that will help keep things warm and give them more light than my living room table!

I managed to get my second earlies and my onion sets in during a gap in the rain last week.

Think I pulled a muscle in my shoulder yesterday  carrying growbags, it's ever so sore.

Spent a couple of hours in the GH due to the rain. Potted up cornflowers, lettuce and peas.  Sowed more peas and kale. Took a flask and kept warm with frequent cups of coffee.

  • Do you think if you left your shoulder in the growbag it would get better? I planted out some cornflower seedlings before all the rain came. I knew it was a bit sacrificial but I collected lots of seeds last year so can hopefully sow some more direct later. They don't look at all happy with me. I emptied my big composter this evening and found out just how little of a bed it covered. I also raked in fish, blood and bone in readiness for planting over the next few weeks. A bit like raking an almost set custard.
