It's not very often that the hills around Glencoe can been seen in bright sunlight.

Loch Lomond looking lovely in the early morning light.

Certainly not a wasted day Fairy 'tho' you did have to turn back.

  • Oh what beautiful pictures Fairy, the sun coming up over Loch Lomond is serene and the views are spectacular.  We have the sea, you have the mountains - such different settings.

No it didn't rain tonight although it certainly looked like it was heading this way with those big heavy clouds, perhaps Jersey got it instead!

That area ( Little Loch Broom)  is further north than me aym - by a good bit. About 250 miles to Ullapool. Long journey if you take the scenic, coastal route, because of the roads, but also several hours if you go the other way. It's where we were on holiday last year, and where I spent my childhood holidays. My Dad loved the landscape even though he was a Londoner, born and bred.

Once you're high enough they're not usually an issue either.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I'll have to come back later to see Fairygirl's photos as my Internet is sooo slow this morning. We stayed in Taynuilt by Loch Etive years ago on a family holiday and watched Highland games in Oban on a glorious warm summer's day.

aym, you said you like Norfolk, do you live there? OH has a cottage in South Norfolk, but it's not by the sea.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

BL - I was born in Oban and left at eighteen.  Family still live there.

Did you take the boat trip up Loch Etive from Taynuilt to Fairy's climbing territory?

Italy is beautiful. I'd never been until I met second OH, now I've been several times. Love Tuscany and Ravello overlooking the bay of Naples.

We love Tuscany too Busy.  Went there for years when Possum was a bairn as she was happy in the sea at the northern end and we were happy to be close enough to Pisa, Lucca and Florence for day trips.  We took a weekend break in the middle one year to go to Sienna and San Giminiano.  Loved it all except for the electric "candles" in the church at San G.

Now we're over this side of France we plan to head to northern Spain for breaks so we can explore the northern coastline and its hinterland  and lots of day excursions round here too while we get to know it..

Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

That sounds fun. We stayed in San Giminiano, well at a farm on the outskirts. Great ice cream.

  • The Channel Islands, Scotland and Italy, all are looking wonderful.

Those are lovely pix BL. I've been to Italy a few times and would love to go back one day. imageimage

The hills I was at on Sunday are at the other end of the loch from Taynuilt. Glen Etive is a classic area for mountains and views. Unfortunately, many of the people driving down it don't seem to understand the meaning of the words 'passing place'....image

aym - May is a good time to visit Scotland, but also September or October. We often get better weather then than we do in the summer months. The south of Scotland is vastly different from further north though. If you want proper scenery, you need to get beyond the central belt - either up the west coast - Loch Lomond/The Trossachs/ Fort WIlliam, then up to Torridon and beyond (the best side image) or in the north east/ Cairngorms area and Braemar/Ballater/Aboyne. If you went in the winter, you'd get plenty of snow and views, even at lower level. You'd be just over two hours drive from the border to get to beautiful Loch Lomond  image
