Thanks plant pauper, but I'm not seeing moss blackening.  The blades of grass have shrivelled and died as far as I can tell.  As Hazel suggests, I can only assume I applied too much and too unevenly, but it's weird how it only affected the older more established area of the lawn.  It had happened within a few hours of application.

And if it was too strong a dose, I feel the box should say something like "Apply sparingly as over-applying can lead to areas of healthy lawn becoming scorched and blackened", because that's what happened.  I thought at worst I would be wasting some expensive product rather than burning my lawn away with caustic chemicals.

Thanks for the benefit of your experience Hazel.  It's probably obvious I'm pretty new to gardening generally.  Patience is something I'm having to learn!

Did you read the instructions before you used the product?

You need to water thoroughly to thin it down and rake off all the dead stuff and bin it.   Remove as much of the dead stuff as you can.   If you have more gaps than grass you will just have to rake it all over to loosen the surface and then re-sow.

Once you have removed all the dead material, spike the whole lawn by pushing your garden fork in at regular intervals and wiggling it to enlarge the holes.  Brush in some sharp sand - not wet builders' sand - to help keep the holes open and improve drainage.   Sprinkle on a layer of fresh compost and then re-sow with fresh grass seed.    Water in after a couple of days if there is no rainfall.

I used this yesterday and set the spreader to 4. I must have walked too slowly as I ended up using too much over the area I wanted! Should have covered 200m2 and I probably covered 90m2

I immediately watered it in and it has black patches where there is moss, I thought this a bit quick as the box says it will take a week. I'm about concerned I've over done it and will have ruined the lawn.

Can anyone advise on how long I should leave it before raking it out? I've bought some patch magic to put down in a couple of weeks as I've used that before and it seems ok.

first time I've used this 4 in 1 so don't want to make the lawn worse than it was before I started!!

if in doubt, read the instructions, and follow them.

If you've over done it. I'd water it in a major way to see if you can flush it right down. Might not work, but I can't think of anything better.

  • Hiya Hostfan,

its getting better!!! Will put up a photo, I ended up getting a gardener to scarify it as the dead moss was everywere so much! He then aireiated it and told me to water it and after 8 weeks he is going to fertilise it with organic fertiliser. He said Ever green 4 in 1 is the worst and never use it !!

    Hi Everyone,

I've joined the club of over doing it with Evergreen 4 in 1.  The chap that was helping me with the lawn is less than impressed with my efforts.

What do you all think? I put the 4 in 1 down on Monday and this is where we as of last night.

We have quite a mossy garden so I think some of the black is that.  How long before I should rake it (1 week/2 weeks?

Thinking I should have just left it alone. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Time and time again people cause undue damage to their lawns with this product. I speak from experience lol. First time I may have marginally over-dosed. Second time I followed it absolutely to the letter. Same results again. Just a horrible product that requires scientific application in the perfect conditions. Not really what your average amateur gardener desires.

Hehe defo right, i have got a proper gardner to help me and he says he feeds the grass with organic feed?

Your lawn looks perfectly fine in the photo. The moss always turns black so I would think if you used the right rate, you must have had more moss in the garden than you thought.  Once it is raked out or scarified you can reseed any very bare patches. The grass will recover in a month or so.
