No it is vermiculite Joyce.  To help with drainage and deter the squirrels.  Cheaper to use grit but I had run out!  Postman has just been.  my garden was judged after all and this bronze award is my third.  i also have a silver but no gold yet. Very pretty award to pin up in my kitchen.  More pics from the garden today.

Thank you for all your congrats!  We have another great day weatherwise so hope to get a lot done.  I have just brought an echevaria in from the cold as it was looking blue but then it is called "Blue Ruffles".  It had only one head when I put it out but has grown another in the summer outside so there should be two lengthy flower spikes next year spreading over the drive.

I couldn't believe how warm it was in the garden this afternoon.

Bulbs planted in pots and Camassias in the ground. Tulips will get done in a few weeks.

Order of Perennials arrived today including three new Penstemmon and two Persicaria Alba which will lighten a shady area.

I'm sure you have been busy too Marion......we need to make the most of the good weather.

I've found that Echeverias  don't do very well up here.

I keep my echevarias and cactus and other succulent plants in the house Joyce and put them out in the garden in the summer.  That way I enjoy them all the year round, but then I have a large bungalow with lots of deep windowsills to put them on so they have the benefit of lots of light and warmth of the house too.  It is cloudier today in Bristol but forecast to be dry again so i am hoping to get as much gardening done as I did yesterday and of course  it is Thursday so the green wheeliebin will be emptied tomorrow and I can have another tidy up.  I am uncovering a little bit of the terrace every day and have piles of ivy to dispose of now.  Also every day I bring three tender plants into the conservatory or to the lee of the house if they are too big for me to lift up the step.  One windowsill of plants gets watered every day as well.  I have so much work to do I can only cope by giving myself daily jobs.  Luckily there are lots of them so variety is the spice of life that keeps me going.  When November comes I will be planting hundreds of tulips.  So far I have bags of Beauty of Spring,Golden Artist, Queen of Night,Dreamland, Cape Cod,Spring Green, Greenland, and Carnival de Nice waiting to be planted in pots.  I also have last years' bulbs which I dried off to plant out in the garden.
