Oh Pdoc, thank you, what a kind and complimentary post. My OH has another less complimentary way of putting it, 'stubborn c*w' is an often heard phrase.
The dog rescue networkers have been absolutely super though and LilyPily on here by putting me in touch with them and spurring me on. They will all be on my Christmas card list for evermore (charity dog rescue cards of course).

When dogs go through life doing their thing and become old and and dopey and a little blind and quite deaf, parting with them is bad enough; heartbreaking even. I've done it three times in my 33 years as a dog owner. (yes my dogs do last that long) Parting with a big strapping young dog is very different. Last year my rescue Wolfhound/retriever cross got lymphoma and I had to part with a relatively young (5) dog. She looked fine and suffered little but she was a star and I can hardly see through the tears as I type. It's awful. I understand your pain. You will always cry for Shadow but know that even with all the fostering and turmoil of the last wee while he will find a happy home where he will be safe and comfortable and you did all that for him. Cry away DD.
Oh Plant pauper - you have set me off again. I am going to have to wear dark glasses to the gym club tonight, I look a mess (well more of a mess than normal).

When I say old and dopey..... This is my view at the moment. The other young "balloon" for want of a better word interrupted proceedings by throwing up a ......sock! Whose you say??? No idea. I rescued her from a "human" who was going to shoot her because she was too small for his purposes! I think it was actually because she stole and ate everything he owned!
You know you lot, my i*****g pile is definitely not going down any.
Tetley, it is all a bit soon and I am a wreck at the moment, but I have thought that if we could be used as a foster home for any future dogs in need (ones that won't go off in search of sheep) I would be happy to do that.
Also, we are a B&B and I will make it known that if anyone transporting rescue animals needs a bed for the night there is one available here for free anytime - Now don't all start queuing up with a kidnapped pet for a free holiday.

I think we're all shedding a tear with you DD - pets offer such unconditional love and companionship that they leave huge holes in our lives when they're no longer around.
You do know that you're doing the very best you can for Shadow. I do hope things work out OK this weekend.
Heaven is ... sitting in the garden with a G&T and a cat while watching the sun go down
It is perfect, he is happy; I am relieved (crying again)!
No words can express my gratefulness for all the help I have received, in every which way imaginable.
I know I will never be able to thank each individual personally because there have literally been hundreds of people in a long networking line involved in this plight.
I can however thank everyone on here, all those that offered to help drive him originally, those that passed on contacts, those that sent kind words and prayers. Also, all the people that have just followed the thread and willed something good to come out of it, it all counts and I have felt like I had an army of helpers by my side.
From the despair and hopelessness on Monday I am so pleased to tell you all he will be ok, more than ok actually, he is like the little lord of the manor where he is and the people who have him are absolutely in love with him already.
Such mixed emotions but I know it is for the best!
The biggest THANK-YOU ever.

What a lovely, if very sad post.
You are doing the right thing, as you say, it could have been so much worse.
You will go through a grieving process, just like we do when we lose people.
I think you have been amazing in how you have managed this situation, especially with the incredibly busy life you seem to lead.
You are an example to all of us.
