I bought a 75ft X-Hose 3 seasons ago. It worked beautifully for 2 seasons and I put it away safely in the shed away from the cold all through the winter and got it out for the first time this weekend and lo and behold, a bulge appeared when it inflated. Then, when I walked up the garden with it, I heard a strange noise and looked back to see this huge sausage shape rising up from the hose, followed by a loud bang and water spraying everywhere. It remains to be seen whether Ideal World will refund my money as I have not spoken to them yet. I have a dilemma now - XHose is fab when it works properly; do I get another one and take a chance on the 2nd generation being better? I feel awkward about the fact that I have recommended it to friends and family, who have also bought one, and now it turns out to be an overpriced gimmick.
Having read the reviews before buying my new hose last year, I went for the 40m wall mounted retractable hose from Hozelock and it has been brilliant. It has stayed outside all winter. I used it again for the first time last week and it rolled out and back like a dream. Not cheap but a good investment I reckon.

I brought the X hose last year. It does everything they advertise and is so much easier to use. Unfortunately after using about 10 times it burst. I returned and got a replacement assuming it was just a fault. Alas the relacement burst on the first time I used it. I am slightly tempted to try the new generation hose but am reluctant unless there is a 10 year guarantee like all other hoses. Anyone know how long the guarantee is on the new hose
The advertising for Xhose emphasises the fact that it gets rid of the water in it and won't freeze etc over winter. It would seem that it does have problem just like standard hoses.
As far as I'm concerned a standard hose has done the job perfectly adequately for me over the past 35+ years and I see no reason to change. I keep it on a reel and it winds back on very well. If I have had a leak develop in the past it has been a simple task to cut the hose and put a connector in. You can't do that with an Xhose.
Unfortunately I've just bought one from Homebase, lured in my the sales pitch. It doesn't kinks but the outer casing wrinkles - think Nora Batty's tights - and forms creases which the water can't pass through. As such you have to constantly smooth the outer casing so that you get an even flow of water. Foolishly I took my own hose to the tip before trying this one. It doesn't shrink back as it shows on the TV, take a long time to smooth out before the water reaches the nozzle and is more fuss than it's worth. Wouldn't recommend I'm afraid
The second generation one is also crap. My first one exploded after a few gos,. Took it back and paid more to upgrade to the second generation which also has exploded.
I've seen these in clients gardens and I just laugh, personally I have a 30m hozelock autoreel which I think is great! It never kinks although I did have a problem with a leak from the hose reel itself! probably caused by me not draining it out before winter one year, I emailed customer services and they sent me a new one out of goodwill! It wasn't cheap but in comparison to other hoses it's excellent
