Star Gaze Lily, you are not getting the point. Debby as well as all the others on the show are chosen and for one reason, the mix is what makes the show for quite a number of viewers. There may be some of us who want to see real dancing, some just want entertainment, some like the total cruelty of such shows, they obviously don't have a chance but their pain and bad dancing gives some the rush they need, sad souls they may be although BBC to get the numbers will pander to their wishes. What is Debby supposed to do, say no to something that makes her feel young again plus large amounts of cash in the bank or does she say I am passed it leave it to the babes. John Sargent had to pull out himself as the GBP kept putting him back in, that is the standard of the show. The GBP sitting on the couch with the take away and bottles saying let us have a bit of fun lets vote that dead leg back and they do.

It is a wonder the BBC and the XYZ factor shows have not had the Do Gooders suing them for torture both to the viewing public or the Celebs, still we all have an off on switch, "oh" and some of us say good for you for not giving in to the agism factor.   OK I will get my coat.

  • Sorry Frank, I am getting the point........i know the BBC want to 'mix it up but what I'm  saying is Debbie is saying she hasn't danced for over 30 years........and she clearly has.

But let's not fall out on here about her or the others.  image xx

Dear Star Gaze Lily, me fall out with you? never, everybody has an opinion, we do not always agree and having seen way too much aggression in my life know there is no point in it, keep dancing, I would if ever they show any one of these Saturdays.

Runnybeak, I watch for the same reason as you with the hope there may be just an ounce of dance in there somewhere, Saturday last week was all hot air and tinsel with a few normal dance steps, the Head judge did mention it. Debby I thought did what it said on the can, she danced.

I think it's more a case that Debbie has stayed fit and lithe and supple to the extent that her abilities seem extraordinary for someone half her age.   The fact that she's done some ballet 30 odd years ago just means she know about posture and rhythm but, as we saw with her cha-cha, doesn't know much about ballroom but she applies herself and learns from the judges' comments every week.

Pleased to see Molly in the dance-off.  AJ needs just such a kick up the derrière to stop him being so smug and make him think ore about his choreography and teaching.  She danced badly cos it was a poor dance, not because she can't dance.

I like the way Joe McF is tackling his dances each week and Aston and Gemma.  Feel ambivalent about Alexandra.  Some weeks good, some weeks OTT, like Daewood.   Ruth can go next and then probably Susan tho I do always enjoy her performance.  I hope Jonny will do well next week now he's got cha-cha out of the way.  Very brave attempt but practically impossible to do well with a prosthetic leg.   Same with pivots in ballroom.  Had a chap with one in our club in Belgium and he never could.

Obelixx, I think we batter our heads against the wall on this subject, people do not want to see golden oldies who can out do the babes, they want nubile bodies doing anything but dance in the correct manner. Rolling about on the floor appears to be the acme of such dancing. Reminds me of a New Year dance we went to when all the young people sat on the floor and seemed to be rowing a boat??? Well if you cannot dance on your feet the derrière comes in useful. As I already said on here my younger family and some of the older ones are taking proper ballroom dancing lessons, what goes around comes around. My wife and I danced until she was unable to through illness, without all the acrobats dancing as you well know is a lovely and often sensual hobby.

  • I am well aware that it's an entertainment show & I am more than happy for a golden oldie to show up the youngsters. I know next to nothing about dance but others in my family do. In the first week when she did well I was pleasantly surprised & thought good for her, then we find that she not only was a trained ballet dancer, but she founded a ran her own dance company. That for me took away the pleasant surprise at her ability.

My point is the original concept of the show was to take people who had succeeded in one area of entertainment or sport etc, throw them into something they had never done before & see if they could not only cope but do quite well. That has largely been lost, that why it was so great last year when Ore won, he had no previous dance experience at all.

When you have done something from a young age no matter how long the gap you will always pick up faster than someone with no experience at all. It would be like putting me in a racing car against Jackie Stewart!

Having the books from the start of the new show in 2004 I know that the term no dancing experience was never the initial format. There were two shows in 2004 one in April and one in October then one show a year.Natasha Kapinsky won the first show in April and Jill Halfpenny the October show, neither ever said they could not dance Natasha with Brendon Cole and Jill with Darren Bennet Jill did the best Jive I have ever seen anywhere, it is still on Utube and worth watching. The 2005 October show was won by darren Gough and Lilia Koplova (darren Bennets) dance partner and wife. I was very happy to see Darren and Lilia on ITT last night.

I among many if you read the boards were upset when Ore Oduba cried his way through the competition to win against two far better dancers Danny Mac and Louise Rednapp. Ore was privately educated and went to University, can any one vouch that in that time he never danced? What is little known is there are specialist trainers for various dances most of the Latin and also the Jive it is not all down to the Professionals but of course we only ever see that part of the training.

Come Dancing was for dancers who did already dance, it was a competition and it was only when they thought about bringing it back that the idea was muted for a mix or Celebs from different kinds of show or sport, the time they get to practice for the first dance has been reduced. I can tell you that learning the basic steps for a dance from scratch in three weeks then performing it is almost impossible, I am sure they do not start ignorant of how to keep the beat.
