Have you tried companion planting. Things like garlic onions or marigolds. The other thing you can do is put little ground garlic on the ground near your plants. Voles dont like strong sents because they have bad eyesight and rely on smell. No guarantees mind but worth a go. Oh and i know some ladys in the local WI who know some words i havn't heardimage

I can relate to most of the above, but the thing that annoys me most is when I'm wrapping presents and lose the scissors or sellotape and I've just got the paper in the right place.  It's a nightmare trying to find them with one finger on the present.

Also, I get annoyed when I'm doing cross stitch and lose the needle.

Thanks Bushman - no I haven't tried companion planting.

It was noticeable that the voles did not appear in one bed earlier this year when I had garlic in there (it was a bed they 'used' last year).

The garlic was harvested about 3 weeks ago & I noticed the first couple of holes in that bed this week.....So, companion planting may well be worth trying next year.

As a quick fix for this season - do you think a few teabags soaked in Jeyes fluid and buried about 4" inches down would have a similar effect? I would keep them about 12" from the crop (Jeyes flavoured carrots - yuck!) but there are enough little spaces that I could probably put one tea bag about every 18" or so.

On many occasions I have set off purposefully from the bottom of the garden to the garage only to forget what I was going there forimage.  It happens in the house between rooms tooimage.

Yup good idea should work just as good. marigolds next to your carrots next year will help keep the carrot flys away.

yes Lesley.  I often put things away in a safe place. Its so safe i can't find them later when i need them

Thanks Bushman - will give those ideas a try image

Lesley - it's when it's your THIRD trip to the same room / whatever to get the same thing that you need to start worrying. I am chilling just regarding it as part of my fitness regime - lots of walking exercise image

How about putting the sugar in the fridge and the butter in the cupboard.  Have you tried that one?

Twice lately, I've left the kitchen tap running while multi-tasking (within reach) to put bread into the toaster, getting tea bags and sugar from the cupboard, boiling the kettle, putting plates, mugs, knives etc. on the counter, and then taking the lot over to the table - and you guessed it, left the hot tap running.  hubby was not impressed, since he is the one who pumps water from down the hill, up to the tanks on top if the hill so that water gravity-feeds down to the house.  Good job he has a sense of humour!
