Chelsea is an old boys club...The sponsors pay for air time, the designers expect gold medals and newcomers like Sue Beesley can't get a space because of the biggest nurseries who are on their 70th medals

Obviously Chelsea needs to be the best of the best but it just strikes me as unfair

I mean look at the trouble Tescos are in now after they put all the smaller shops and farmers out of business

You're right Wintersong.  Why does the BBC, which is supposedly not a commercial channel, start every programme with "The Chelsea Flower Show, sponsored by......."?

For the same reason as showjumping has jumps with the name of the sponsors on them, and football grounds have the names of the sponsors on hoardings around the pitch and on the shirts of the players etc.  Gone are the days when if such things were appearing on the BBC they would be covered up.  Horticultural shows, football, art exhibitions etc, are businesses.  They wouldn't exist without huge investment from sponsors - the sponsors wouldn't and couldn't invest the money unless their businesses benefitted in some way - it's what makes the world go around.

To expand furrther, this website is run by a commercial company which makes it's money from advertising - forum members are the beneficiaries of that (especially those of us who run Ad-blockers on our pcs).

Dovefromabove is right , the only thing I would add is commercialisation has made these shows more professional and more accessible to everybody to see

I will be watching again tonight , personally I miss Alan Titchmarch

I like Monty but he does look a bit scruffy at times but that's his way image

I love Monty crumpled and wouldn't have him any other way! Natural like the best gardens! image

Wonky and I think Monty's middle name must be Rumpled - but we like him that way - it suits him image  (a little joke there, nearly as good as one of Verdun's image)

Can't imagine what he'd look like if he were suited, booted and pressed to within an inch of his life with his hair all tidy - he certainly wouldn't look like Monty image

Dovefromabove, I have no objection to advertising hoarding etc being on view.  I'm quesitoning why the BBC actually does the advertising as I stated above.

Oh, I thought we'd decided on 'Rumpled' image

I don't see it as advertising - simply stating a fact.  Think Match of the Day refers to the Barclays Premier League or whatever it's called nowadays doesn't it?  And the Stella Artois Tennis Tournament?
