Hi Bekkie, they often go for one spot. The frogs will have chosen the best spot for the spawn to develop. Given the choice they would go for a shallow sunny area first. It is only when there are hundreds of them it ends up over huge areas, because they just can't fit it all in the best bit!

A spawn covering will will not deoxygenate a pond. The jelly is permeable to oxygen. image

IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A GAY FROG CONVENTION !

  • I seem to have a similar problem but in much smaller quantities. I have two sets of two frogs which have been in the pond every night and they haven't laid any spawns.

The males do arrive before the females, so it's possible Marc that is what you are seeing. If they are paired up, it's just the weather, been relatively cool and dry in most areas and people are reporting lots of frogs in ponds, no spawn. Wait for a warm wet evening. image

Lots of frogs and spawn in Nottingham.

  • I created a small pond last year in a small South London garden. The plants are thriving, it looks healthy, and I hope to attract frogs or any kind of wildlife but am wondering if they will find it given how many gardens around here have been transformed into "outdoor rooms" and what not. What are the chances?

Finally! When I had almost given up!

I found a small splodge of frogspawn this morning in North Wales! No sign of any frogs - just evidence of their existence and the fun they had last night!

I really didn't think we would have any as we have a trio of ravens who spend quite some time looking at the pond in the morning (and ate many many tadpoles last year -  I have a plastic safety grid to keep my toddler safe and they could stand on the grill and access all areas of the pond with the 2 adults training their 3 offspring to do the same image but I saw a few young frogs last year so obviously some made it past the birds and the newts!)

Wondering if there is more to come but very happy to see any at all image

little red q, there's an ad on telly lately. I think from RSPB, which says " if they create a home, they'll find it"

    Good luck

    Devon.
  • Usually have spawn in February but nothing this year. Two pairs on top of each other but no croaking. One dead adult male in the best of the two ponds! What's happening?
